car brakes squeaking

he says the brake pads (?) are supposedly new, but it's been making noise for a couple months (since my parents bought the car used). is there still a chance the car is being damaged by this?

Might just be break dust. Take them to another mechanic and have them checked though, just to make sure.

They might have forgotten the goo too, as GZ said.

brake dust, or when the new pads were put on the mechanic didn't put the goo on the back of the pads or in the case of some toyotas there are thin copper plates that go behind the pads to keep them from squeaking

it is a toyota... '95 corolla.

when my new (to me) car did that, I took it back under warranty, had them "dismantle and reseal the brakes" and never had that problem again... <shrug> good luck
