Car bomb found in London this morning.

Just switched on the news to this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6252276.stm

Holy crap that's a big one! The whole car was apparently packed to the brim with explosives and shrapnel. Can we not go more then a year without someone trying to bomb this place?

Everyone cross your fingers and hope there's no more like that waiting out there...

Yea i've been watching this on the news, Pretty serious but the media are milking it, its been on for the past hour!

Yea I'm working in central London...

I think their plan was to set it off at night though, to catch clubbers, tourists, that sort of thing, rather than city workers. I guess they think that would have done more economic damage - damaging the tourist industry etc.

I'm in Belfast, so I guess I've become desensitised to carbomb alerts 😉.

Still quite surprising to find something so big, in central london. Coming up on 7/7 anniversary. I was over in England the time the bombs went off two years ago. Big panic.

I wonder what'll come of this, and if any follow-up has been planned :Q.

Smacks of the same kind of target as the Bali nightclub bombing some years ago now...

when is it safe to go home? what time do you leave my beloved home town git 🙂

Sensationalism by the BBC?

Sensationalism by Scotland Yard??

Definitely sounds like an international ring of highly trained terrorists to me - crashes a car into a dumpster at 2am? LOL
Sorry, at least with the facts that they have out now, I'm more inclined to believe that this wasn't a bombing plot.

It was a car packed full of gas cylinders and nails and emitting smoke... if not a bomb, what do you think it was?

Earlier they had a bit up on the story saying "we're leaving all our options open, it could even be the Irish".

Yeah, because there hasn't been an across-the-board paramilitary ceasefire in Northern Ireland, and infact the IRA/UVF/UDA didn't even formally demilitarise.

Hurf durf all Irish are terrarists!

It was an idiot. I know several teenagers who thought they were going to make a huge explosion and fireball by shooting a gas grill propane tank with a 22. Didn't work. The article said there were about 15 gallons of gasoline in the car. Big deal. Do you know how hard it would be to make a serious explosion using gasoline in the confines of an auto?? Oh goody! Nails! Not like a car has enough glass, etc. to act as shrapnel.

As far as smoke, wasn't it reported that the car had crashed into a dumpster? Personally, just last week, I had a 5 gallon gas can, filled. And, I had about 15 pounds of nails in the car. BIG nails - 16 inch nails for landscape timbers. I'd like to claim that I had 2 full propane tanks in the van with me; I was supposed to. But, alas, I had forgotten them. Hopefully I don't run out of propane in my third tank before I get a chance to get the other two filled. But, inevitably I'll be in the middle of a chicken bbq this weekend and run out.

OK man, whatever you say - you're clearly an expert on the subject.

CNN reporting it was:

"A device, consisting of 200 liters of fuel, gas cylinders and nails linked to a triggering mechanism"

It was quite some time ago and actually the political landscape has changed completely since then. There hasn't been a carbombing (attributed to Irish loyalist or republican paramilitaries) in either mainland GB or NI since even before the initial ceasefires of 1997. So thanks.

Ages ago, i mean, it's not even within living memory 😛

Even if you *did* think that was a long time ago, does that make what they did ok?

I didn't even remotely try and justify what they did. It was terrible and utterly abhorrent. My point was that times have changed, but evidently stereotypes linger on.

Is that the PC term now?

Don't you see how people like you are just as bad as the PC crowd? You're just looking for ways to be offended by the wording of sentences! That's pathetic! I see no indication of political correctness there.

It's hardly 'stereotyping' or particularly 'lingering' as far as i'm concerned. They're relatively recent events, and it seems pretty reasonable to keep an open mind as to the perpetrators were, in the absence of any other information. It's not as if elements of Irish society have suddenly decided to embrace and love the UK since the last IRA bombing.

I assume you'd say it was a 'lingering stereotype' if the US said they thought a domestic bombing *could have been caused* by Islamic fundamentalists, because the WTC bombing was 'quite some time ago'? I rather doubt it 😛

Not really, given the differences in the parallel you are drawing. Islamic fundamentalists are well known to have an agenda of violence and terrorism directed particularly at the US and UK, and have kept this up with video statements and claims of responsibility and so on even in the last months (see also: attacks against US/UK troops in Iraq and Afghanistan), compared to the IRA who have not only decomissioned their weapons but made a clear and definitive statement denouncing violence and embracing peaceful political methods to further their agendas.
