Car being left idle for months due to dead battery.....

Would it be advisable to change it or just leave it as it is until I can attend to it? The story is that my car is half a globe away from me and my friend has been helping me start the car to keep the battery alive until it died lately. I would be away from home for another month or two so would it be okie to just let it be and change it later or it's not good to leave the engine as it is now?

It's a Accord 05. The engine oil is pretty fresh before I left the country. Weather would not be a problem as I'm from a tropical country. 🙂

For just another month, it really won't matter. At this point there will be two outcomes:

1. You'll jump start the car and the battery is still good enough to take a charge. The alternator will recharge the battery and you'll live happily ever after.

2. You'll jump start the car and the battery is too old/dead to take a charge and you'll have to buy a new one.

IMO the most important question is how long has the car been sitting? Has your friend been DRIVING it at least around the block a few times or has the car just been started and sat there? Tires can develop flat spots when the car just sits.

Oh crap.......erm....It's been sitting there for almost 8 weeks now. Well, the tires are about bald too so I guess it's about time to change them when I get back home but I did inflate them well before I left it there. Not sure if that matters. I reckon that I would need a whole new battery so it'll be okie I guess....

If it were my car, I would get a battery charger and try to charge up the battery first. If the battery will take a charge, then it's probably okay and you can just start it up and drive it for a while.

It needs to be driven for good distance once in a while to keep it healthy, not just started and run around the block every now and then.

Hopefully the battery is just dead from not running the engine long enough to charge it.

If you could get your friend to hook up a charger to it, it might already be ready to go.

It's hard to get a charger around here. Usually we would just jumpstart the car or change the battery altogether. It's still under warranty so I'll see what he can do. I should really ask him to drive my car every once in awhile I guess.

So the car will only have been sitting 3 months? That's not too terrible. When you get home you should just charge/replace the battery, check/change the fluids, and go get some non-bald tires. It's not the best to leave a car sitting but if we're only talking 3 months it shouldn't be a big deal.

bignate, yeah, it should be only for 3 months max unless those guys here want me to stay longer due to the cheapness of the labor that comes with me. LOL

Will change the fluids when I get back.....kinda sucks having to drive a small rented car here. :S
