car batteries are f'in heavy. now with 100% less car starting

i have my car up at school, and for some reason the battery gets drained (probably because of the sound system the previous owner put in).

the battery ended up dying (enough that it couldn't turn over, anyway) so today i took out the battery and walked it ~0.7 miles to the nearest place that could charge it.

damn, those things are heavy. that is all.

Hold it upside down next time, it will be easier.

On that note, I carried a 24-pack of beer (bottles) 2 miles last week. Damn box nearly broke by the time I got home and my fingers were killing me.

i would of walked around hugging the 24 pack.

as for the battery i must agree. they did have a battery carrying tool that makes it a little easlier since it has a handle and everything. but still a heavy brick. carrying it inside the house from the garage is an annoying task.

Ever picked up a 3 liter bottle of sulfuric acid? It weighs a ton.

I use to watch guys in the lab try to pour nearly full bottles of the stuff into 10mL graduated cylinders with their faces pressed up against the work area. At first I would stop them and ask them to pour the acid into a small beaker so they wouldn't spill and burn their face off. After a couple of years, I just let them do it. I figure Darwin should be allowed to have his way with them.

It would have made more sense to go to the store and buy a new battery. You need a new battery anyway, and that would halve the walk. You could also spend twice as much for an Optima, and have much less weight to carry, and it would last twice as long.

Throw it on your shoulder next time?
Edit: To seem like less of a prick I'll add that I seem to lose grip in my hands when I'm carrying heavy things so I always try to carry things on my shoulder when they're heavy/I have a long distance to carry them.

Good luck with it lasting.

The best way to get a battery to last is to buy the largest you can afford. LAst time I checked Optima didn't have 1200 CCA's. Sears DieHard Gold did, and it lasted 10yrs with multple complete drains in a commuter truck and car.

I would vote for Odyssey over Optys though.

mine is 700-800CCA i think. something in the car is draining the battery.. probably the cd changer + amp that the previous owner put in. did not do the most professional job with the mods he did

Should have drank some on the way home. Would have quenched your thirst and lightened your load. 😉

well as an update, i got the battery hooked up, but when i go to start the car, i hear something akin to a belt turning, and that's it.

any ideas?

Is the engine cranking or all you hear is the whirring noise?

BTW, Year, Make, & Model please

just whirring noise, sounding like a belt rotating.

Why didn't you just buy a AA Energizer battery and jump that bad boy. If it's good enough to start a spaceship, it's good enough to start your car.

Sounds like your solenoid is not engaging the starter's pinion gear with the flywheel.

Sounds like it's just the starter motor spinning free.

Did you check to see that your alternator is putting out and even charging the battery?

even if it weren't, a freshly charged battery should start the car, right?

I used to run regularly while holding a 5gal water jug. Feel the burn.

Yes, it should. Start looking at the battery cables...all the way to the starter and to ground.

Actually, it weighs just a little over 5.5 kilograms.😛

...But yeah, the stuff's heavy. The lead is even worse. Batteries ARE heavy.
