Car back - Rockin' the rice rocket

RGUN

Golden Member
So I've had my car back for over a week now. Its taken some time getting use to it. I am definitely not feeling how loud it is.

I took some people for rides yesterday in a large parking lot and I was told that it was smoking all 4 tires through first, second and the beginning of third. So its got a bit of power.

Plus Ive taken some steps to make it better looking. Ive gotten rid of those ugly chrome style tail lights, and swapped to a wingless carbon fiber trunk, that is painted to match the car.

I'm taking the car back to get detuned just a bit, but so far so good!

Yeah I have to stop forgetting to include that

Its an '07 STI

What kind of exhaust set-up do you have? Catless???

that would be highly illegal no?

Some states they would never catch you if you did have that setup. No emissions testing FTW! Environment fail though... 🙁

Currently it is catless, but I am waiting for the cat to come in so I can install it. My car will pass Ontario emissions testing without a cat.

The noise problem is mainly from the external wastegate. Which I am going to recirculate into the downpipe. It will require a detune, but if I intend to DD this car it has to be done.

Dude, MOE (Min of Environment) is going to own your ass if they catch you without a cat. Better put in an aftermarket upgraded cat that flows better than be catless.

Technically you can only "recirc" back into the intake, which is what the stock DV does. I had a Forge DV that dumped external on my car for a month. I got fed up with it sounding like a Bus every time you lift off the throttle. I know your pain!

Yea all that loudness.......ehh I liked it when I was younger but the potential for cop is a big turn off now. One of my friend's has a dump and catless. Too loud for my tastes.

As I stated in the thread that you quoted, I am installing the cat when I get it detuned.

No no, Im not talking about a blow off valve or a by pass valve. I am talking about the turbo's wastegate, which opens and allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbo charger in order to not develop too much boost.

Currently I have an external wastegate, which essentially means that when my turbo has spooled up to produce maximum boost, it dumps all exhaust gas right off the heads before the turbo so as not to overboost.... as you can no doubt imagine though, once this valve opens up, the exhaust is coming right off the heads between 4500 and 7500rpm and is insanely loud. I am going to direct these gases through the downpipe to avoid this. Your car most likely has an internal wastegate, which means that the turbo has an internal bypass... its a lot easier and quieter, but very inefficient.

I do have an atmospheric BOV by the way, but its a huge Tial unit with massive vents, so its very quiet.

Agreed, the whole purpse of this car was the be a completely stealth rocket. I want people to think its slow as shit and just leave me alone, but with this exhaust and catless it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Damn man, thats a beautiful car -- I hope to get pictures of mine soon. Im trying to get a front spoiler on though to compensate for the wing delete.... also looking for a scoop delete.

Do they have a decent lip spoilers for the rear decklid??? That would look good without being too gaudy.

Yeah you can get a beautiful lip spoiler, but actually thats why the front spoiler was designed, so they could use the lip spoiler.

Currently have the same wheels on but don't use the mini spoiler anymore, just pull the wing off and put some vinyl over the holes. Most people don't like the look of the mini wing.

I got a good deal on a Seibon CF trunk lid. I looked at just unbolting the wing, but there are 17 holes in the trunk!

Dont worry, its not rice - I had it painted to match the car.... well its a bit rice I guess, I left the underside virgin CF.

You've got yourself one hell of a good looking car man. Have you done anything to the engine?

Not necessarily. There are numerous people with mid-1980's 944s without catalytic converters who still pass tailpipe testing easily. (I am not one of those people, my car still has all emissions control hardware, I'm just pointing it out.)

My car happens to be one of those that are able to pass the emissions testing without a cat.... but without a cat you get a shitty odour that makes me feel bad for those behind me. So its going in soon.

Honestly, I don't care either way. I just wanted to point out that a cat wasn't exactly "mission critical" for passing tailpipe testing.
