Car Audio Question

I replaced the rear speakers on my 2002 Accord Sedan with a new pair of 6x9 Alpines (120W, 35W nominal).

I notice that these new speakers don't have any real bass to them! The sound is clear, but there's no "boom". Bass is turned up all the way too. The stock speakers provided a much much much more bass (Pioneers, 35W max).

Could this be because I'm using the stock deck? I'm guessing that the deck isn't providing enough power...

What's the relationship between how much power a deck puts out, i.e. 50W per channel and the wattage rating on speakers, max and nomimal?

Thanks!

no0b. 😛 You should have replaced the stock HU with something with more oomph. Factory setups might push maybe 10Wx4 RMS - improving that to 50Wx4 will get you more sound.

For your "wattage relation" - "peak" means next to nothing, you want RMS and nominal numbers. Your amp/HU should be able to push 2/3 to 3/4 of the speaker's nominal max. (Again, oversimplified - a hardcore audiophile can elaborate more. Shockwave, where are you? 😛)

If you're wanting some bump in the bass region, you won't get the funk without junk in the trunk. (Get a sub.)

What I did was cut off the wiring harness and replaced the ends with 2 quick disconnect terminals. I checked to make sure that the speakers "explode' out instead of "imploding" which is what happens if you mix the 2 cables up right?

I'm trying to keep costs down 🙂

I don't want to buy a new HU and find out it won't help my situation because I did something wrong or only the wire is bad, the speaker is bad or something like that.

The rest of the sounds are fine, just no bass.

So put the old speakers back in, sell the Alpines, and drop the coin on a sub if you want bass.

I want some clarity as well.

I don't need a sub in this case. Think of you playing music in your car with the bass turned all the way off. It sounds like that.

hm.. there werent any crossovers installed with the speakers were there ? Just a couple of wires?..

I don't know. Either way, you won't get much bass out of anything if you don't have a sub. if you wan't more clarity, youll need more power, and probably a better head unit. find a HU that suits your needs, and get an amplifier.

Would it be a better idea to buy an amp or to buy a new deck? Assuming I can only afford 1 at the time.

The speakers I bought were new off a friend, so they were cheap. They're "three-way" if that's anything special.

I know I'm a newb... that's why I'm asking for help 😛

Yes JohnCU, it sounds like there is no bass at all.

Factory deck with factory speakers = adequate bass, considering stock parts

Factory deck with new speakers = no bass, maybe there is a bit, but nothing even close

It could be that one of your speakers are out of phase. Check to see if your wiring is correct. If it is correct you can try switching the positive and negative speaker wires on ONE speaker to see if there is a better bass response. As mentioned before, just get a cheap amp to power those 6x9.

I swapped the wires on speaker and still sounded very weak. Listening again, there is a little bass, but no where near what the old stock speakers put out.

I'm pretty sure I don't have enough power to them. I plan on getting a new deck to replace the stock one.

My quesiton is though, how do all the watts relate to each other? Does the nominal power of the speaker have to be lower than the max power per channel of the head unit?

did you swap both at the same time??? just go and swap one speaker, and then see.

watts, RMS is where you should run, a lot of h/u say 50x4 watts, but youll never get 50 watts, more around 22-25watts per channel.
