Well i just had a 40x4sony amp installed, sounds much better with that thing:) I guess my headunit really was under powering the speakers after all. Anyhow, i decided it was time to replace the front 6 1/2 inch with a blown tweeter. It was the older reference model(blue cone), so i bought a new set from frys. The new ones, as kewl as they are have a much larger magnet, and the screw holes stick out so they are in the way. It just won't fit:(

(by the way all these speakers are 6 1/2" 2 way coaxials)

I was told that the polks also use silk dome tweeters, is this true? Are they of the same quality as the infinity's? I can't stand cheaper harsher sounding speakers. Oh yea, the other option would be to get infinity kappa's, but i have no idea how big their magnets are.

I guess i could just use 2 screws to hold the oversized infinity's partially in and use their grill instead of my own.. the ugly solution.

so my options are:

polks that fit and possibly sound as good
infinity kappa's, if they fit and fit budget
infinity reference (new), ugly partial install
infinity reference (old), if someone knows where to get those cheap:p

Help!!

That stinks, yeah. You pretty much have to put junky speakers in the doors of most foreign cars. I just use Best Buy cheapo pioneers in the doors, but have some nice JBL tweeters on my dash.

yes, i don't want to settle:( non silk tweeter= crap. When i first got my infinity's i also tried out some sony's.. jeez god those were harsh. thats when i realized i was forced to pay the price premium for better speakers:p

well the civic wasn't too bad for fitting speakers, 6x9 in the back and 6.5 in the front, basically the biggest u can buy. Its just that infinity decided to increase magnet size by an excessive amount.

arghh, just figured out only polks top model has silk tweeters.. grumble

Non silk tweeters does not equal crap. Is the magnet too big as in too deep? If so, the kappas have even a greater mounting depth.

Boston Acoustic (yes, the same guys that make computer speakers) make some great car audio speakers. They use soft dome tweeters and I have them installed in one of my cars.

You should check out some of the MB Quarts for some nice titanium tweeters. The mounting depth is about a quarter inch more for the kappas over the references.

Call crutchfield, they can help you out with the depths of speakers. If I recall though the kappas are deeper than the reference series. Also the kappas are less efficient than the reference series if I recall and from my experience that sony head unit will work, but you might want to consider an amp in the futute.

ok, i tried a partial install of the new infinity's.. no can do. no matter what u can't get more then 1 screw hole to line up, stupid thing only has 4..grr.

The reason i want silk domes is because i can't stand harshness or biting highs.. titanium is probably harsh:p I tried out the polk non silk, kind of harsh. Guess i'll check out ba:)

and as for the kappa's, i guess i'll call them. They list the kappas as usable for my vehicle.. the new reference aren't.

by the way, that 40x4 is rms from my new amp the eqx404 sony. Its 40rms-90maxwatts basically. Hm, well if the kappa's are less efficient, couldn't i just adjust the front/rear balance? Does that tilted tweeter thing help much?

UN1Xnut,

Where does one get ba's? couldn't find any on crutchfield.

Okay from a guy who has MB Quart's in my rears. Don't get em. The metal tweets will kill your ears, just like they do mine. :(
Don't get me wrong. They sound great, but after a while you just can't take em anymore. These are either love em/hate em speakers IMO.

All BA's are not all silk. In fact the Pro's (their high end) are metal, but the more reasonable Rally series are silk, and are some of the best I've heard. They compare with the JL Audio speaks quite well. JL's are real nice too. However the three way Pro's are SUWEEET beyond belief. Same metal tweet, but are unFingbelievable.

Do not put speakers in, unless they fit right. Air leakage will ruin the sound.

More then one company makes speaks with Neodyuim (sp?) magnets that are REALLY small. I have a set of the Kenwoods (Excellon series) in the fronts, and they are real nice IMO. They have a soft tweet too. :)

Check out the other Infinitys. I don't like Polk car audio myself (home is great). I've had good luck with Kenwoods when on a budget, and recommend you hear em.

Here's some info I posted before:

Sorry man. I'm too tired to link em all. Copy, and paste will have to do. :)

I'm also way too tired to go into detail, but you need to do a LOT more research, before you buy. I hope this helps. Please adhere to the advice given on CAR AUDIO FORUMS, and not computer ones. They won't steer you the wrong way man. I would go with Elite car audio myself. I've learned quite a lot there.

Good luck man. :)

I'm still leaning towards the infinity kappa's(tilting tweeter and $119), although i'm not sure its tweeter won't be harsh. The polk dx6 definetly has a silk tweeter, but its $149

see my website, redfirebird.com . in my system in my car, I have Infinity Kappa 6.5" rounds all the way around, 2-ways and 3-ways. I love them, they sound really awesome! however they didn't fit exactly right in my car, my local install shop had to make custom wood mounting brackets :( but it was worth it because they sound great

No doubt the kappas sound great, anyone who tells you their don't have beautiful highs is a bloody liar! :) Your amp should be enough for some good volume too! If it helps the reference series 6.5" 2 ways are 2 and 1/16" deep. The kappas is 2 and 9/16th..........

ah well i took the safe way out. went to circut city and got polk dx6's. 2 ways that have 1" silk dome tweeters. Sounds alright, the price hurts though, $150. Funny thing is the screw holes lined up perfectly on these where as the ex602a polks were a pain to install(not enough holes). Returned the 602a's because they were definetly harsh. Good thing about polk is small magnets.. i don't know what infinity was thinking.. they should have used more powerful, not bigger magnets in their new reference series:p
