Car audio....make missmatches

I took a car stereo out of my moms old truck(toyota) and i want to put it in my car(honda) are they compatable? i don't know what plugs in where on the back of the toyota one, it's not labeled, any help? thanks

Go to best buy, tell them what kind of head unit you're plugging in (or take it to them) and tell them what kind of car you want to hook it up in. They'll have an adapter for $5 or so. Or you can do it the hard way. All those wires are color coded, so you can just start cutting and reconnecting. I did that once, was a PITA but it worked.

well, i havne't looked at the wires on the honda, but the back of the toyota unit doesn't have lables, so i don't know which one is my 12v which one is my ignition wire, etc.......i could do it myself no problem, but i don't know what goes where in the back of this one.....

<< Don't cut the wires inside the dash. Ever. >>

I didn't, it just unplugged, there's a set of terminals in the back that just came out, i did this in about two minutes and didn't check to see where they went...just unplugged it and left(truck isn't around here) it was a spur of the moment thing...i checked on the manufacturers website but they dont' have any info on the model(it's from '84ish) so bah! if i took a picture would one of you car audio people be able to tell me which ones did what?

Good.

The two stereos mount differently, but you might be able to make it work if you're creative.

You should go to a u-pull-it type of junk yard and get a wiring harness from the inside of a Toyota for the Toyota stereo. While you're there, scope out all the Hondas with aftermarket stereos. You might find a wiring harness adapter for your Honda. Otherwise, buy one in a store for $10.

Helping with wiring colors is difficult because there is no standard between auto makers, and I don't know what Toyota uses. There might be a label on the Toyota stereo that lists them, then again there might not be.

When you find those Toyota colors out, connect them to the harness adapter. The adapter colors are as follows:

Yellow ? constant power
Red ? switched power
Black ? ground
Orange ? illumination (not always used)
Blue ? power antenna
Green pair ? left rear
Purple pair ? right rear
White pair ? left front
Grey pair ? right front

Then just plug the whole works into the Honda.

If you can get a wiring harness it's gonna save you a LOT of time for a small bit of cash. Toyotas and hondas have different stereo hookups in the car to plug into their headunits so you then get a universal adapter to give it a universal end - then you need to get the way for the universal adapter to go in with the headunit and hopefully there is a harness for that (normally it's by brand name of headunit I think).

So basicly just find the plug that goes on there(can i cut the ones from the old toyota off and just use those, since i'm never using it again.....and follow those leads? the only problem i'm really having is i dont' know what the terminals on the back of my toyota unit go to......🙁 though i'll probalby end up having to find an adapter, what is this, i'm confused about the adaptor.....

If your ma's Toyota is being junked, then yes, cut the wiring for the Toyota radio out of the dash of the Toyota.

The adapter is probably just called a "harness" in the biz. You connect a replacement stereo to the harness, and that harness just plugs right into the wiring in your car. It's asking for trouble to cut any wire inside your dash, so you use a harness so you don't have to. The harness you buy/find will be specific to the Make/Model/Year of your car, since all car manufacturers use different shaped "plugs" for connecting their factory radios.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: you buy a harness for the Honda.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I just bought an Eclipse CD Player(Should be here like Tuesday) and I don't know what harness to buy for my car. It's a 1994 Geo Prizm, do I buy one for GM or Toyota?

heh yeah it's being junked, i sorta totalled it 😀 So i cut the wires off the one in the toyota, use that to plug into the head unit, and then use a honda adaptor, and wire those to the ones connected to the toyota radio(that i cut off?)?

If it'd be faster to talk, you can IM me at Lithium381, your help would be appreciated.

You got it! Then you plug the whole mess to the existing plug inside the Honda dash.

Thanks for the IM, but I've really got to go. I'm due at work in 20 minutes and I still need to shower.

Good luck.
