Car audio buffs --> looking for new subs

I ended up going for a brahma 15"....mmmm 😛

I threw this together in a few hours today for the mean time...sounds pretty good compared to when I had it in a sealed box.

Spec vs spec (if you choose to believe them), they're not as good as the shiva...especially noting the Xmax.

No personal experience, but I've read alot of good about them. You might look into a Koda 12" as well. The Koda subs use the XBL^2 motor structure. Its like a baby Brahma.

Yeah, but the Xmax is only ~1.4mm more each way, and they're over $135 MORE each 🙁

Edit: I already have a Tempest as a HT sub (pics) so this wouldn't be my first time with adire subs, but I'm just wondering how well they do in a car audio environment @ this price...

For two Shivas, you could do better...you can usually find two Tempests for that price if you look in the right places. I know I got my Tempest for like $125 shipped new, back a year and a half ago.

Shiva's are great little SQ subs, and very efficient.

If your looking for some supersubs on the cheap, check out the Oz Audio Matrix Elite series. Very similar performance to the IDMAX at literally half the price.

tempests need room and in car setup, they wont be ideal.

Shivas are good.

Koda's are amazing.

since i am unsure of the prices, try out http://www.respl.com they make good woofers also. XBL^2 woofers too.

tempest would want more power than you have.

you cant go by just specs alone. drivers all sound different and little things make big differences.

for my next setup i was planning on going 1 or 2 tempests IB in a trunk w/ about 1Kw of power on them total.

Yeah, I have a tempest and I paid $125 shipped for it new from the same place I'm looking at the shivas from.

Those look like they run $250+ each...a bit more than I want to spend.

Koda's cost more than I want to spend. I'd be willing to go maybe $150/each, max. respl.com doesn't do anything, it's just a blank page.

Shiva's tend to do very well in the car audio environment, I believe box size would be about 1.25-2 cubes sealed, but I can't remember exactly off hand. If you are looking at a pair of shiva's I suggest a different amp. With the one you have, each sub would see about 120-130 watts rms. Realistically, you'd want to run closer to 300-400 watts rms.

If you dont wanna spend a lot, look into the RE series from Resonant Engineering (www.reaudio.com) the 8s are 56s bucks shipped per driver, but you'll get a discount the more you order. From the accounts of numerous people, they sound great and the output is suprizing from 8s. Or, you could look into the 10 and 12 inch versions in the RE series. I've got an RE12 on the way to me, should be very promising for a 77 dollar sub.

I think I'm going to build the largest box that will fit well while leaving me a decent trunk also. I'll screw the front face on and just seal it with some weatherstripping/rubber so I can remove it...then I'll try my tempest by itself in it.

nice choice. i went with the RE HC15 a while back. i dont know what that corresponds to now (they dropped that series and have some other lines now)....

all in all a great sub
