Car Audio: 6.5" Coaxials, what do you recommend?

Well, I pick up my new 2k2 VW Golf GLS TDI on the weekend, and I want to rip out the stock speakers and headunit and put some new ones in. The car takes 6.5" Coaxials in each door with a tweeter in the front pillars and just by the door handles in the back. I plan on keeping the stock tweets and powering all of this with an Alpine CDA-7861.

What would you guys recommend that are reasonably priced? (ie. hold the $400.00 Infinity Perfect 6.5" coaxials 😀)

<< how mcuh was your TDI ? >>

I negotiated the price down to $25,600+tax including freight and PDI. The list price on it was $26,870+tax. All prices in Canadian dollars. 😛

*edit* the car is the GLS with Luxury Package and Cold Weather package. I also plan on trying to snag a free stainless steel VW travel mug when I go to pick it up on Saturday. 😀

if you are going with MB quartz or other high end components, you may want to consider getting an amp to run those thing. The headunit amp won't do any justice for those speakers. You might as well go with a lower end speakers. And if you are going to spend money on something like MB Quartz, you may want to check into other high end spkrs like Focal, CDT, or DEI. I have nothing against MB Quartz, they are great speakers.. but after hearing a pair of Focal.. i was like wow.

For what your looking for, anything would be great. MB Quart and BA might be a little too high end. I know DEI Studio 6.5 separates are some of the best in the biz and also about $200 cheaper than competing separates, but they need an external amp. For the money, I would look for Infinity Reference Series. About $75 or so. A better place to check would be www.elitecaraudio.com there forums over there are REALLY helpfull.

I suggest just spend a little more money and get components and replace the stock tweeters. I highly recommend the JL Audio XR series, CDT, Focal, or the DEI studios. I have heard great things about all, and get a good amp, around 100x2 to drive them. Music detail heaven. 😀

damn you viperoni, y do u post things like that shortly after i get new components for my car?!?!!??

and i would reccommend infiniti kappa components, not too badly priced, and sound damn good!

I've been posting about those Morel's for the last 3 months or so 🙂

Infinity, typical hyped, overpriced brand.

My vote also goes for CDT Audio....

I'm running CDT audio hi defintion components 6.5 with a 1 inch silk tweeter with 75 watts to each speaker. It sounds sweet....i get lots of complements on my components all the time for the smooth natural sound tight mid bass

DOH, just reread your post. Still, for a coaxial speaker MB quarts can't be beat.

What you posted sounds like you want separates - with a 6.5 driver in the door and a tweeter somewhere else. Much better than a coax speaker simply because you can get the tweeter closer to ear level and off the floor. For separates any of the ones mentioned above are great.

Careful though, high quality 6.5 separates can be (are) rather deep because of a good magnet/voice coil. You might have a hard time mounting the mid-driver without some serious modifications.

I just recently helped a friend rip apart his Jetta's door panel to install new speakers. From what I can tell, you got plenty of room to work with. Not definitely sure about the Golf, but shouldn't be too different from the Jetta's.

Was it a pain to get the panel off? I remember hearing somewhere that it can be difficult...
