If you read the article, they compared them as potential buyers would compare them...

...the potential buyers are yuppies.

If they compared them largely based on offroad capabilities, the Land Rover would've been at the top. But who's gonna take a $50k SUV off road? 2% of the market? 1%?

Which one of these SUV's doesn't belong...? The Envoy Seems totally out of class here? I mean, where's the Expedition (they had the upscale lincoln) or Explorer? What about Pathfinder or Montero?

If they are doing Luxery SUV, then the Escalade should have been the GM in the test. I'd still guess it'd be 8th place, but, at least it has gold trim. ;)

I dunno.

Touareg if from this berber word : tuareg

It translates to a nomadic tribe across western/northern sahara desert.

These nomads are adpet at desert travel and for thousands of years been doing same with their camels and caravans.

They are tough, mobile, resourceful and know the terrian in the minds .. better than a GPS would .

A befetting name for a SUV .. nomad ..sahara //desert .. moblity .. adventure ..extreme weather .. all elements taken care of.

I still don't buy it. Not many people who are willing to caugh up the cash for a shiny new Lexus or BMW would even consider a "lowly" GM or Ford.

So true.

I once had a customer who cared more about the color of his 18" LCD matching his case than the response time or res.

So a Range Rover comes in the same class as the rest? Isn't this the new Range Rover with its sweet-ass interior and exterior?

btw, the Lincoln Aviator looks pretty good..it has a nice interior now.

I think VW initially wanted to name their new SUV the Colorado but GM snatched it away by naming their new compact truck, Colorado. So Toureg was their backup name. :)

The GX470 and Touareg OWN!! It's also good to see that C&D isn't licking BMW's nut sack and Volvo's 5th place showing is more in line with my reasoning (which is why I'm perplexed as to why it got MT's SUVOTY award).

Wow...C&D called the Envoy's interior: "early-Hyundai". Suprising since Motor Trend praised the Envoy's interior when they named it their SUV of the Year.

Dude, Motor-Trend is crappier than Toilet Paper,.... seriously!:disgust: The only half-decent US mag for cars if C&D and that too whenever they are not licking BMW's or Honda's nuts..

And about the MDX, you are better of buying the new Honda Pilot. Not only you can save a good deal of money, but it's more practical and u do not have to deal with the cheesy low-rent interior.

The Montero and Pathfinder are really quite outdated and hence C&D didn't even bother ... The criteria was new or past winners of comparo with price range between 35-50K$

About the X5, while the front and side profile look nice, has anyone looked at the rear profile. It's down right ugly. Check the pictures of it compared to the other SUV's back. The Volvo looks the nicest from the back with the VW a close second.

my dad had an Envoy rental truck a little while ago and the interior wasn't all that bad.. GM doesn't make top notch, so comparing to other GM's... nothing out of the ordinary really.
the extended cab version of the Envoy is hella ugly on the outside, the smaller shorter one looks alot better.

If you guys bothered to read the article it states that they were looking for $40-$60K price range SUVs and that they sent out invitations to all the car companies but several of them did not send in any entries most notably MB. A Range Rover is $70K I believe, an Explorer doesn't hit $40K and neither does the Pilot. I don't think Ford wanted to send out an Expedition because they know where it would have ended up in the rankings. Also, the new MDX is significantly different from the Pilot. It has a 260HP engine, new 5 speed transmission, skid control, new suspension, etc. The new MDX will kick its ass.

Yeah, the Trailblazer/Envoy extended versions are ugly. The shorter ones are better looking but you lose a 3rd row seat.

Man, I can't believe how high the market drives the prices of some of these luxury SUVs. I mean, they're nice and all, but for $50K I think the M3 and Z06 might be above the GX470 on my shopping list. I'll friggin' borrow my stepdad's dually if I need to haul something!

But how are you ever going to take little Timmy to soccer practice in a Vette or an M3?

From this article in Detroit News

BARCELONA, Spain--The story that's been retold by more than one Volkswagen AG employee concerns former Chairman Ferdinand Piech, who in an earlier role as head of research and development for Audi, Volkswagen's luxury arm, was testing a prototype in northern Africa.
According to the story, the prototype broke down miles from civilization, and Piech was eventually rescued by several members of a local tribe of Berber-speaking herdsmen. The tribe is known in Saharan Africa as the Tuareg. These non-Arabic people practice Islam, herd cattle and keep slaves, and the men, not the women, wear veils.
I asked a VW official in Europe about the story and got the cryptic response: "I've heard that one, too."
For the record, no one at the German automaker seems to know exactly why the company's brand-new sport-utility vehicle was named Touareg. Or why they chose to use the obscure French spelling, rather than the more common Tuareg.
