Car alarm.

Yesterday evening I noticed that I could only open the locks on my newly acquired 2005 Mazda6 with the transmitter. The 'ARM' button wouldn't lock the car for anything. Fast forward to this morning, I was unloading my kayak from the top of the car about 70 miles away from my home at 6am in Monterey and the friggin alarm goes off. I pressed 'Disarm' many times to no avail. I put the key in the ignition and turned it to the 'on' position and pressed each button for 10sec each but nothing worked. In the end, I had to open the hood and pull off the battery cable since people were starting to stare.
I found the main box for the alarm and pulled the harness off. I plugged the battery terminal back on and the horn still blared. In the end, I had to pull the horn relay off to make it stop.
As of right now, even though the horn doesn't come on, anytime I open the door or start the car, the hazards blink as if the alarm is activated. Fortunately they time out after a few minutes.

Is my alarm hosed and should I buy a new one? The one in the car is made by 'Code Alarm'.

take it off completely and get a lojack? I don't see the point in getting an alarm. people just ignore them when they go off.

long drive. short pier. take a bus to the honda dealer. 😉

no seriously, it sounds like this is an aftermarket alarm? if so, i'd have it removed and just go with the factory unit, most of which just pay attention to doors being opened.

when i was getting my alarm put in I went with Viper, code alarm is problematic when I was talking with the tech. I payed a bit more to get the alarm put in but it was done right and I have had no problems with it.

When an alarm goes off and will not shut off it means that forwhatever reason the alarm thinks that the car is without a doubt being broken into. For instance my alarm will chirp if bumped (like a parking bump). it will wail for a minute if it is anything harder than that but, if a window breaks or the car is jarred really hard it will go off for quite a bit longer. I think that your alarm so doing something similar and will not shut off due to shoddy craftsmanship or the lack of feedback telling the alarm that the danger is over or nonexistant.

Yeah. Looks like I'll be getting another alarm on the car. Lo Jack does work but by the time you get the car back, chances are that there will be some damage to the car like broken windows etc. I think the car alarm will at least deter the thief before something bad happens.

Wishful thinking. Car alarms are worthless. Kill switch+lojack are best for anti-theft.

Most alarms include a kill switch (in a sense). If the alarm is triggered, the engine cannot be started (well, supposedly) until the alarm has been switched off. My 951 is like that. The Volvo is too. The 951 will kill power to the ECU relay if the alarm is armed and will not restore power until the alarm is physically dis-armed (being 21 years old, the alarm on the 951 is physically armed/disarmed by a separate key). The Volvo is simliar, but uses a key fob and will disarm the alarm if it's started with the correct key based on the RFID tag embedded in the head of the key.

A car alarm will deter joyriders. A person who really, really wants your car specifically will get it. There's almost no way to stop them.
