So about 2.5 years ago, I went to get in my car. It does not have keyless so as usual I put the key in the door and turned it, but then the alarm started going off. That is messed up for two reasons. For one, the alarm is supposed to only go off when you manually pull up the door lock (like if you broke the window and pulled it up). Second is that if the alarm is going off, putting the key in the door and unlocking it is suppose to shut the alarm off. Since that one day, after having worked fine for 5 years, it now will trigger the alarm every time I unlock the door with the key.
The only way to stop the alarm then is to disconnect the battery. 99% of the time I have just left it unlocked, as I'd rather do that then have to pop the hood and pull the terminal every damn time. That didn't really matter considering the upper peninsula of Michigan. Once my sunglasses did get stolen from the console but meh that was parked at night at shady alley behind a bar, LOL.
Anyway, I've since moved and I don't feel as comfortable with having to leave the car unlocked at all times. Also when I eventually sell the vehicle, I'd imagine being unable to lock all of the doors would be a major deal killer for most.
My thoughts:
1) I can't use the passenger door to unlock the car because its lock mechanism is and has always been effed up for some reason.
2) I don't believe it can be disabled, at least not easily, given the nature of being an alarm system and that it is tied in to the starting of the vehicle, especially without schematics.
So it seems like the best solution is to get the whole lock mechanism replaced, being that something in there related to the alarm seems to be the culprit. I think that could be gotten from a junkyard? I'm not sure how much the labor would be but if it ends up over say $100 total I'm not sure I'd bother.
Anyone have any idea what in the world would cause this?
