Real dumb move to go to the insurance company. I bet it'll cost you a ton more.

so it would've been better to pay 200+ cash there?
I didn't realize it would be so costly, I thought he was trying to rip me off for such a small minor damage that is barely visible

I assure you he wasn't trying to replace his bumper, which would cost closer to 1000 dollars to replace. Fixing dents and cracks can be very costly if you want the paint to match up just right. He was doing you a favor but not reporting it to the insurance.

and it's on the back bumper on a old car... where it has a bunch of other scratches
not like it was on a new car on anything

Going thru insurance, his insurance company will make you pay to fill in the scratches and repaint his bumper. I'm estimating that will cost you $500. Now, take on surcharges and you'll end-up paying $1000 in total.

He probably planned on getting a lawyer the whole time anyhow and was just seeing if you were stupid enough to give him an extra $200 on top of it.

yeah...because your deductible is probably higher than what you have to pay (unless you have $0 deductible). If this is as small as it seems, the insurance company will try to find every way possible to to make sure the damage is less than your deductible.

Not only will you have to pay out of your pocket, but you will also pay more on your premium.

Absolutely!!!!

It really doesn't matter what you thought the repair price would be, $200.00 is extremely cheap to just keep your insurance company out of it!

Good Luck!

i've always wondered how well this receipt/waiver form will hold up in court.

Yes. Something that states for $x you are released from any further damages caused by your accident with so and so on xx/xx/2008.

Definitely pay with a check or money order.

I have seen first hand people that have paid someone for damage only to get contacted as well by their insurance company.
