I have played a time or two....
And here's my memory of it:
Location: Large field. Hills and obstacles preferred. Thorns, ponds, puddles, bushes, etc. a plus.
Time and conditions: NIGHT. Full moon is too bright. Full moon overcast or half moon preferred.
Setup: a flag is placed on each end of the field in a tree or on a pole with a single flashlight fixed on it.
Rules: FULL CONTACT. Teams try to make their way across the field undetected and stteal the other team's flag. Bases can not be guarded any closer than 30 yards (or else noone would ever get the flag). Once someone takes the flag, the only way for the flag to be returned is by tackling that person. The rules for a down are the same as in football. Obviously, if the person makes it back to base without being tackled, that is a full capture.
Now, there may be OFFICIAL rules of some kind, and I'm sure there are different ways to play, but I can tell you this: DAMN, IT WAS FUN. I got RIPPED UP playing, because I got tackled out of nowhere RIGHT INTO A BRIAR PATCH. Ouch.
Another addition to this game that can be added depending on the number of players/the size of the arena is that members of opposing teams can tackle anyone of the opposing team to protect their runner. --Kinda like a "block" in football. You can't just tackle everyone you see at random, but if your team member has the flag, and the guy is about to get creamed, you can tackle the tackler first to make sure that doesn't happen.
My warning is this though: These rules, though they make for the most fun gameplay, are NOT for older people. If you haven't played a full-contact sport without pads in a while, TRUST ME, IT HURTS NOW. What would have sent you bouncing and rolling as a young teenager will hobble you for DAYS once you reach on into your 20's.
