capture return value in Bash

Why am I not allowed to capture the value in BASH?


I can't do this

variable1 = $?


but I am able to

echo $?

and I get a value.

any ideas?

'blah=$?' works just fine here.

You aren't using spaces between the variable name and value are you?

#!/bin/bash
test=teststring
echo $test

Works fine, just not with spaces.
