Trek star's space travel unease

Stewart said human beings were not ready to live on other planets
The actor who plays the captain on TV's Star Trek has said he thinks resources spent on sending people into space should be used on "getting this place right first".
Patrick Stewart said Earth should be our focus rather than other planets.

"I'm a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to the whole business of space travel," he said in a BBC interview.

As commander of the USS Enterprise on the show, his character Captain Jean-Luc Picard is an avid space traveller.

Patrick Stewart is no more a Star Ship captian then he is a Roman Centurian (Ever seen I Claudius... he has HAIR!)

He first and formost an actor, which means his opinion is not any better then yours or mine.

Yes, but if we followed his way of thinking, nothing would ever get done, no innovation, no new technologies, no reaching for the stars.

One of the quotes I like from West Wing was about this very thing:

Sam "There are a lot of hungry people in the world, Mal, and none of them are hungry 'cause we went to the moon. None of them are colder, and certainly none of them are dumber 'cause we went to the moon."
Mallory "And we went to the moon. Do we really have to go to Mars?"
Sam "Yes."
Mallory "Why?"
Sam "'Cause it's next. 'Cause we came out of the cave. And we looked over the hill, and we saw fire. And we crossed the ocean, and we pioneered the West, and we took to the sky. The history of man is hung on a timeline of exploration, and this is what's next."

YES!
i love me some I, Claudius.

who cares what he thinks about space travel, as someone above said he is just an actor, nothing more, nothing less...his opinions on matters such as space travel, the government or anything other than acting techniques should be weighed as much as the court jester's.

Well, seeing as he really is a Star Ship Captian and has seen other worlds, maybe he knows whats best for us little mortals on Earth.

I'm not saying I agree with his opinion, I'm just pointing out that just because he is a famous actor doesn't mean his opinion is worthless, as he's still a very intelligent man.
