It's actually King of Fighters XII, not XIII. The game looks good but I could never get into the SNK gameplay, sans Samurai Showdown. Cham Cham bitches!

Here is the KOFXII footage:

KOF has always been too stiff and this game is no exception. They skip out lots of animation.

KoF looks good considering the hardware it runs on. For over 10 years the franchise has run on MVS hardware, while Capcom's games have gone from CPS1 > CPS2 > CPS3 and NAOMI. They have to limit the number of frames per animation to keep the game running smoothly.

KoFXII doesn't seem to improve much on the older games though, as far as animation anyways. It looks like all they did was redraw the sprites, but they're probably using the same engine. Looks like the SNK version of SF2THD Remix to me.

Wish I could try this game. I'm an SF fanboy, but there are certain characters in the SNK series I really enjoy playing, Iori for example, he's a great character.

If they have it the same system as KOFXI it will probably be a very good game. Even if they take out the saving/quickshift system and have it the traditional KOF 3v3 I think it'll be fine

There are plenty coming later this year too. The genre is not old.

KOFXIII looks 10 billion times better than SF4.

Name a couple good 2d fighting games that have come out recently. Notice in my op I said 2d b/c I like Virtua Fighter.. but DOA, Tekken, and Soul Caliber are horrible. I am planning on getting an Xbox360 when they come out with VF5R (I am assuming they are coming out with it).

what time frame do you consider lately?

Arcana Heart
Sengoku Basara X Cross (import)
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (Accent Core Plus for import)
KOF XI (depending on how recent you are talking

There are a ton of promising ones coming out this year too Blaz Blue, Battle Fantasia, Capcom vs Tatsunoko, all 2d or 2d game play with 3d characters

Sounds like you will play any 2d fighter out there. Of that list i know Arcana, GG, and KOF, all of which are mediocre at best.

Arcana is really big on east coast, Sabin from the SRK forums did pretty damn good at SBO last year playing Arcana and has sort of been gaining popularity.

There is a HUGE scene for Guilty Gear even though it won't be an official game for EVO2k8.

KOFXI was popular a year or two ago, and people play the remake of KOF98.

To call any of those games mediocre must mean you don't probably don't play good fighting games.

The only fighting games I like are SF2 series, Capcom vs Marvel series, Darkstalkers series, and VF series. All the others are either poor copies or just boring and uninspired. I remember when all those horrible Neo Geo/SNK fighting games were coming out one after the other. Of course, that is what KOF is. Arcana Heart seems to rip off Capcom games pretty badly. Guilty Gear is just... dull, although some of the moves are kinda cool. all things said, why would I play rip offs when I can play the originals?

edit: and why should i care if a game is "big" in this place or that place? Lots of bad games are popular.

I don't know most of the games you are talking about but what I do have is jojo's bizarre adventure for the DC, it sucks balls.

GG XX how does that compare to the wii version?
KOF XI is too recent i'm trying to catch up on the last gen fighting games.

There was a pattern to the KOF games, most people just didn't catch it. KOF games with new features were released on odd years, the following even just added the usual complement of characters.

Must play fighting games on Neo (from someone who owns a Big Red 4):
KOF97
KOF01
Garou MOTW
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 (The Real part is important, Fatal Fury 2 is a totally different game)
SVC Chaos
Samurai Showdown 5 Special

You talk about the games listed being bored an uninspired when you list MVC the series. The Marvel Vs. Capcom series was just recycled over and over from the original Xmen: Children of the Atom play system and it ended up being incredibly retarded in MVC2 where there are 50 characters and about 5 of them are even feasible to use in competitive play.

How exactly Arcana Heart even remotely rip off of Capcom? Arcana puts in mechanics found in plenty of games, homing guage for guard cancels and techs, and having a "burst" like in guilty gear. Arcana is NOTHING like any Capcom game.

Get good at fighting games and maybe your opinion might matter.

oh snap!

I do agree that MvC was just rehased street fighter vs marvel and xmen/sf alpha games.

MvC2 had lots of good characters for competitive play but I didn't like the very few levels or crappy music.

The music and announcer voice was bad, but the play was good for the most part. There were only a few characters that were dull to use.

Haha you sound like a ten year old. "get good stupid head or shut up!" Actually, I was a very good player in the day in the arcade. Dhalsim Zangief and Akuma combo to kick every one's ass around. no one thought you could use Dhalsim ;) Without the ridiculous air combo crap too. That was back in the 90's and early 2000 though. My biggest disappointment with the game is that they didn't have Bishamon in it. I was also good at Samurai Showdown, World Heroes (who wasnt good at world heroes) and Darkstalkers.

If you think only 5 characters were feasible to use in compettitive play, that only shows how poorly you played the game. there were probably only 5 who WEREN't feasible to use in competitive play.. although I think you could use any of the characters and do well if you knew them. I really can't think of a single character that wasn't good to use.

Gimmicks aside, those games were all very much copies of Capcom games and played very similarly, except they feel a bit cheaper. The fact that MVC2 was recycling characters is the whole point of the series! The idea of the series (duh!!!) is to be able to sue all the different Capcom characters in one game. that is what made it so great! That is what makes it fun to play to this day- so many choices! the only ones not so fun to use are the Ken/Ryu clones, unless you have a soft spot for one of the clones (like me for Akuma). Other than that, all the characters were pretty different and had creative moves.

Sorry if it hurts your feelings, I cant get past the feeling of "been there, done that" when I play those other 2d fighters. Can't help that I feel that way, sorry!

Uh you ever been to a real MVC2 tourney? Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, Cable is in EVERY team with captain commando as an assist. Every now and then you'll see a Cyclops, Strider, or Doom but if you didn't have any of these in your team, you didn't win.

I went to some tourney's. I usually picked spiderman, doom and gambit. I got very far with that combination.

I will agree that MvC2 is awesome but so is GGXXAC and AH and contrary to what you say, they aren't similar to Capcom games at all. GGXXAC is much deeper with many more options.
