Link - Obvious trend confirmed!

Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom has sworn off the practice of making games exclusive to one home console like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's shareholder report for its fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31 of this year.

Henceforth, Capcom will develop many of its games using its internal MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."

As a result, the company "will aim to increase revenue and dramatically increase the number of users by launching, for example, Resident Evil 5, ... Street Fighter IV, ... and Bionic Commando [on multiple platforms.]"

Capcom's strategy appears to already be in action. Aside from its work on MT Framework platforms, the zombie-smacking Xbox 360 action title Dead Rising is already getting some multi-console love, and several games including Street Fighter 4 may be Wii-bound.

3rd party exclusives becoming rarer and rarer.

Yes, now we can focus on purchasing good consoles instead of being stuck with crap for a great game.

 Unfortunately there will probably always be first party exclusive titles, but it's nice to see more non-exclusive third party titles.

Too bad there are so many good first-party games.

After my experience this generation though, I might end up purchasing only one console next generation and living without the first party exclusives.

What has changed for you?

1. Bought one console this generation knowing I'd only use it for exclusives; so far that's only 3 games.
2. I've lost faith in third party developers producing games for Nintendo systems.
3. Online games have made it more desirable to stick with one system. All of my friends play on the same system, and I expect that to stay the same next gen.
4. There won't be a media format war next generation (at least not one that will affect movies as well).
5. I'll probably have kids, and less money to spend on games.

Some things could affect my decision though
1. What Microsoft does when in a few months people who bought launch 360s start getting RRoDs (likely not their first) outside of the three year warranty.
2. What the controllers look like next gen.

the ps3 is obviously a better built console.
originally, i wanted the xbox 360. but after reading so much bad news about it (rrod, noisy dvd drive), i bought the ps3.
thank god exclusives are dead!!! i could never understand why a company like capcom would do exclusives. its about time they see they woulda make a lotta money by pushing the games to all the consoles out there.

Well, I meant the franchise in general. As long as DR2 is coming out.

good thing - capcom pc games are usually cheaper than the ps3 / xbox 360 games.

Good. I say leave exclusives to first-party titles. Then I'll get to pick a system based on its capabilities, not its games. The controller's design, the prices/configurations, the multimedia options, and so on.

Wonder if Capcom will do anything about the Dead Rising small text issue when they port it to the SD-only Wii? I thought it was cheesy enough for them to basically say, "Deal with it or get an HDTV" before, but Wii owners don't even have a choice.

Well, not that any of the consoles this generation deserve a medal or anything, but I was referring to the 360's unreliable hardware. Reliability is very important to me.

Devil May Cry 5 on the Wii ? I don't see it happening.

No Exclusives just sucks ass though. Sometimes it can persuade the consumer to purchase the other console. But oh well...to each his own.

No matter to me though...I am still waiting in the wings to pick up a X360.

I still give two   to Capcom for quality games though.

Why do you think third party exclusives are good? Not trying to start anything, just curious to see your opinion.

It sucks because they aren't trying to persuade me to buy a ps3? ok...Well at least we agree on Devil May Cry being awesome.

I can see his point. If all the systems have the same games then it wont matter what system you get it will have the same games which, IMO, makes the game developers lazy and we will end up with a lot of shit games. My opinion. I remember way back when we had Atari 2600, ColecoVision and Intellevision. All had some exclusives but for the main games it was for all systems, and at the end of that round the games really sucked ass.

Yes, then you can actually base the system on its merit or faults (ie, faulty hardware of 360 or lagging online capability of PS3). No to exclusive! :D
