Capacity limit of USB enclosures?

Hi All,

I've recently acquired a 2.5" USB hard drive enclosure for my 20GB laptop hard drive. Now I was just reading the box and it was stated there "Maximum Capacity: 40GB".

Is this limit actually real? I don't see why I can't go out and acquire an 80GB laptop drive plugging it into this case and it would just work! Has anyone had any similar experiences? Anyone who has used one of these enclosures with a drive bigger than 40GB?

Thanks in advance.

It may be a limit of the controler inside the enclosure, or could be for heat related reasons. Not all of them are the same. I am using a 5.25" enclosure with an 80gb drive.

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't think there's a controller inside one of those enclosures? Isn't it just a IDE to usb converter? Hm.... Maybe it's heat related but I wouldn't think that a single platter laptop drive would have any difference in heat patterns just because it's a larger capacity.

What brand did you buy? Do they sell encosures with hard drives? If so, then 40 gigs might be referring to the biggest product that they currently offer.

I don't imagine that there would be a real 40 gig limit ...

I'm also wondering what brad u got. I got a bytecc last summer, i think the limit is in the hundreds (like 300gb i think). AluminumStudios is probably right that 40 gb is the highest capacity of HDs back in the time your product was released.

You should also check with the manufacturer to see if there's updates.

edit: my bad, didnt see that it's 2.5 drive. i looked at newegg and the bytecc limit is 80gb. Look at the manufacturer's website for the same model, and see what the description says now.
