capacitor Q (orange crusty stuff)

Hi

Two of my capacitors are bulged at the top with a crusty brownish/orangish substance a little bigger than the head of a larger pin.
It also so happens that my mobo, i believe, is fried.

Is this coincidence, or has anyone had this stuff, too?

thanx

Yes, people say this has happened to them, and it liable to make the mobo quit working at some point. What is disturbing is when you see this and the mobo hasn't quit yet.

I notice in your sig that you have an MSI motherboard. Is it just my imagination, or do I see quite a few reports of MSI's boards having bad capacitors?

MSI and Abit or the worst offending boards with this problem...

...even some P4 DDR boards that are less then 6 months old are already "popping caps"

wow this gives a whole new meaning to busting a cap in your ass, or in this case, wallet.

yea, i just bought another MSI board, Turbo 2
allows me to use my sdram, but i dont see how i can run it at 133 without overclocking,
my old board allowed a bios setting to change the memory from 100 to 133 but this one doesnt seem to have that option. went from an award to a phoenix bios....

Poor quality electrolite capacitors will sometimes leak. You can also hear them as a subtle high pitch buzz.

alm4rr,
What rating are your caps?
I've got a couple of new Nichicon 1500uf 10v that might work for you if you are going to replace yours.
The images are not from my web site, just linked for reference.

I really have no idea. I contacted MSI for warranty info cuz it's less than 2 years old. They haven't replied back yet.

Do you just solder them on?

You'd have to desolder the old caps and solder the new ones in. It's pretty straight forward as long as you've got an iron with a fairly fine tip. Of course you want the cap values to be close also.

You can find out what size yours are by looking at the markings on the sides of them.

The K7T-Turbo boards are known for their HUGEfailure rate after ~1yr of use, the caps swell, and eventually leak..

MSI knows about it, it was complained about a lot in their newsgroup forum.

I believe the failure rates after 1yr were 40% and up.. :(

I've only seen caps swell on my previous mobos (and my friends') when they've been running overclocked for a while. Again, just my experience.

If a board is doing this while running perfectly within spec, well, that sucks.

yea i wasn't OC at all

im gonna have to call MSI and see what they do for warranty - on one of the MSI boards, they said that MSI will send a Turbo2, which won't really help me cuz i already bought one. I wonder if they will refund me the price of it, or at least something.

I've seen a few boards (most never overclocked) that had bad capacitors. Funny thing is that I've seen a board run without a capacitor. A buddy of mine owns it. Trying to remember what the board was... think it was some KT133 mobo, maybe Shuttle or Azza. It is still running to this day in a secondary machine with a Duron CPU. Fairly stable.
