Good.
VANCOUVER (CP) - Vancouver Canucks star Todd Bertuzzi (news) was charged Thursday with assault causing bodily harm for his on-ice attack on Colorado Avalanche player Steve Moore that left Moore with neck injuries.

The charges were announced by the criminal justice branch of the Ministry of the Attorney General after an investigation that lasted four months.

The attack was witnessed by over 18,000 people at the arena and has been shown repeatedly in television clips broadcast across North America and Europe.

Bertuzzi has been ordered to appear in provincial court July 9.

The suspension cost Bertuzzi $501,926.39 US of his $6.8-million salary. The Canucks were also fined $250,000.
Actually, it cost him a lot more than that. Might have cost him his career.

He was standing up for his friend Naslund... with that in mind.. I'd say it's assault as opposed to a spur of the moment on-ice thing... he deserves it.

They only charged him today because the Prosecutor has been dragging his feet., doing "research" or something.

I'm just curious...how many of you people saying "Good" have watched more hockey than just the video of Bertuzzi clobbering Moore?

I have. I have been a lifelong hockey fan since I was 5 years old, and he totally deserved to get charged, suspended and hopefully jailed for that uncalled for cheap shot.

I have been a big hockey fan for five or six years now, and I feel no sympathy for Bertuzzi. There is a difference between fighting/scrapping and clocking a guy in the side of the head from behind and then driving his skull into the ice with all of your body weight.

History of criminal charges on ice

Canadian Press

6/24/2004

Vancouver Canucks star Todd Bertuzzi was charged Thursday with assault causing bodily harm for his on-ice attack on Colorado Avalanche player Steve Moore. Here is a look at some past NHL incidents that led to criminal charges:

- In 1988, Minnesota North Stars forward Dino Ciccarelli was convicted of assault for striking Toronto defenceman Luke Richardson several times in the head with his stick. Ciccarelli was sentenced to one day in jail and fined $1,000 Cdn.

- In 1982, Jets enforcer Jimmy Mann was fined $500 and given a suspended sentence in Winnipeg after being charged with assault for leaving the bench and hitting Paul Gardner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, breaking his jaw in two places.

- In 1977, Dave (Tiger) Williams, then with Toronto, was acquitted of assault for hitting Penguin Dennis Onchar with his stick in a game at Maple Leaf Gardens.

- In 1975, Dave Forbes of the Boston Bruins was charged with aggravated assault after a fight with Minnesota North Stars' Henry Boucha in 1975. The trial ended in a hung jury and the prosecutor then dropped the charges.

- In 1977, Dan Maloney of the Detroit Red Wings was acquitted the same year in Toronto of charges of assaulting Leaf defenceman Brian Glennie.

- In 1969, Wayne Maki of the St. Louis Blues and Ted Green of the Boston Bruins became the first NHL players hauled into court after a stick-swinging duel at a pre-season game in Ottawa. Green, who suffered a fractured skull, and Maki, who was not injured, were both acquitted of assault charges.

heh. When Dino went to play for the Caps, they came to town against the North Stars one time, and i got to go to the game. I was just a kid, but i remember Darien Hatcher just laying Dino out and getting a 4 min double minor for it. I was across the stadium in the upper deck and i could see the pool of blood under Dino's head.

Dino was a dirty ass player. (so is Darien though)

I'm suddenly reminded of the Sega hockey scene in Swingers.

"Dude, I'm gonna make Wayne Gretzky's head bleed!"

:p

I'm a die-hard hockey fan and I am glad to see him being charged... this was pre-meditated thuggery... this is NOT 'part of the game'. Fighting, physical play, hard hitting are all part of the game... this was not.

Nah, where do we draw the line in sports? Should a pitcher who throws at a batters head with a 100mph fastball be charged with assault? Should a soccer player who intentionally kicks a goalie in the nuts be charged with assault? If a football player intentionally jabs another in the eyeball while in a pile going for a fumble should he be charged? How about a blatant late hit on a quarterback's head... from behind?

Serves him right. I hope they throw him in jail for years.
