The problem is, you want an actual war. In actual wars, the system of having the biggest stick failed. It is all the non-wars where it worked.

One possible example:

I do see Pakistan helping us out. They didn't want to at first after 9/11, but then they saw the size of the Taliban military, the size of our military, and made the wise choice.

In any case, the Cold War was won mostly because President Reagan had a brilliant plan for winning that war. He decided that instead of going to actual war, the United States would simply spend the Soviet Union into oblivion. Sure, the B-1B and B-2 bombers are stupidly expensive. Star Wars was never really real (but the Ruskies didn't know that), and all it it made the prospect of the USSR trying to keep up with our spending impossible. Without capital markets to borrow in, they could never hope to match our spending.

So we basicly won the Cold War by spending more money than we really had, and far more than the Russians could ever hope to spend. :) Hey, I'd rather have the $5 trillion bill for that than a billion dead people.

I am talkig about peace. There are many situations where "having a big stick" helps, but peace isn't one of them.

Btw, Reagan only sped up the process, the fate fo the CCCP was decided long before he came to power. Plus, there never was a prospect of having a billion people dead.

You don't know your history... We came very, very close in 1962 during the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The fact is, if you have a big stick you may not need to go to war, there would be little point.

Many Americans are fat and ignorant, you'd just be speaking the truth...

1/2 of all American's are overweight, 1/4 are obese...

That's just disgusting...

I'm not an exercise freak, but I'm reasonably in shape, I don't overeat, and I get some activity every day, it just isn't that hard...

Most of the people in America need to get onto my all new diet... I call it the "EAT LESS FOOD DIET".

Shocking concept, I know... :p

I do know my history, but I was not talking about 1962, I was talking about the 70s and 80s. As you are well aware, things cooled down considerably after the Missile crisis. Commanding Heights is a good book which relates history and economics in a nice way. Check it out if your reading queue is empty

But agains I was talking about peace, not deterence.
