Cantennas?

Hello everyone, I need to build a cantenna that is able to connect me to a wifi about a mile away. Is this realistic? How far do cantennas normally reach? If not cantennas, are there other amplifiers on the market that will let me get the wifi signal from about a mile away?

Not without both ends having some high-powered, directional, antennas, WITH direct line-of-site (no trees / houses in-between).

Probably have to use $$$ commercial gear, probably 900Mhz and not 2.4Ghz.

Look into Hamachi and VPNs.

Thank you for your reply. I don’t mind buying those antennas but unfortunately there are a few houses and tress between my home and the wifi location. Would this stop me from being able to receive wifi?

It could. It only takes a couple of trees to stop most 5GHz wireless stuff. That's why the antenna systems are built above them. Otherwise you'd just be guessing as to whether it would work or not. 2-3KM is doable with professional equipment, but lack of line of sight will cause nothing but headaches.

Forget it if there are many obstacles in between, cantenna or commercial.

Two high masts on both locations that can be seen from location to the other.

On each mast Weather proof Accesses Point (AP) with High gain Directional Antenna.

Each AP connects with Cat 6 POE to the main Router on each location.

Then, Bridge the two Access Points

Hardware for such Project can be found here.

a lot of the guys on amazon who sell ubiquiti sell with poles and all that, its not uncommon for mesh networks in remote place
