Can't view media in Internet Explorer

So I used windows update the other day to patch my machine up to date. There were I think about 9 updates that were needed.

Everything went smooth, but now when I browse Internet Explorer I cannot view any sort of media files, like if I go to nhl.com, the menu on the left does not appear. On the forum here, right below where it says favorites, I have an empty box, with a little icon with 3 colours on it in the top left corner.

Anyone know what happened?, how to fix it?

You should probably update flash...

I actually tried this, but I just get the same icon on their download page. It says something about clicking the information bar at the top, but that bar never shows up.
