Cant Upgrade ATI Radeon 7500 drivers

I downloaded the new catalyst drivers for XP and when it tries to update them it says "INF error" Video Drives not found. I got this video card of Ebay its not an ATI made board, OEM board with radeon chip and 128 megs of ram. im guessing thats why I cant upgrade it. I tried to do it with a previous driver release and had the same problem.

A small guide how to use official ATI drivers with "powered by..." cards!
Ladies & Gentlemen ,

enjoy your weekend. Here is the ultimate guide how to use the original ATI drivers for the "built by ATI" cards with 3rd party "powered by ATI" cards WITHOUT flashing the BIOS! This was tested with the HIS Excalibur Radeon 8500 and the latest official 6071 driver.

1. Download the driver.

2. Unpack the installation files and wait for the message, that your card is not supported. Close the installer.

3. Go to the directory with the extracted files (in this case C:\ATI\support\wxp-radeon-6-13-10-6071-efg\atidrive

4. Search for the file "atiixpag.inf" and open it with an editor (i.e. notepad)

5. Find the part with the card identification, it looks like this:

[ATI.Mfg]
"RADEON 7000 " = ati2mtag_RV100, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5159&SUBSYS_00BA1002
"RADEON 7000 " = ati2mtag_RV100, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5159&SUBSYS_003A1002
[...]
"RADEON 8500/RADEON 8500LE " = ati2mtag_R200, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_514c&SUBSYS_003a1002
"RADEON 8500/RADEON 8500LE" = ati2mtag_R200, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_514C&SUBSYS_013A1002

6. Add a line:
"My Radeon 8500" = ati2mtag_R200, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_514C

7. Safe the file.

8. Install the driver with the setup.exe file (C:\ATI\support\wxp-radeon-6-13-10-6071-efg\setup.exe)

Done!

Have fun with your new full driver!

my guess is that it's not actually a radeon 7500 since there were no 7500's with 128mb ram and ati doesn't do like nvidia with there chipsets

I'll agree that maybe he doesn't have his facts straight as far as either the model or the amount of memory, but what do you mean by they don't do what nvidia does?

They certainly do farm out their chips to certain 3rd party oem's and have been for awhile now.

I would like to see that too,I never seen a 7500 with 128megs.

JoyTech (Apollo) produces 128MB Radeon 7500 boards, albeit with only SDR SDRAM.
They've actually been available for a number of months now.

Actually with the new Catalyst drivers you're not supposed to have to edit anything... and those edits don't work apparently.
From the Catalyst FAQ:

Q17: Do I have to have a "Built by ATI" graphics accelerator to use CATALYST?

A17: No. Both "Powered by ATI" and "Built by ATI" graphics accelerators can use the CATALYST software package.

If this download ever finishes I'll be able to test it myself... I have a powered by ATI 128mb 8500le

Ok guys figured out how to get it to work...
Go into the INF file and find a card similar to yours under the [ATI.mfg] part and then delete everything after the & sign
Example:
Change "RADEON 7000 " = ati2mtag_RV100, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5159&SUBSYS_00BA1002
to "RADEON 7000 " = ati2mtag_RV100, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5159

Then you can go into your device manager and update the driver manually.
- This is basically like Rage3d said for the old drivers... except you have to edit an existing line not add another one.
But from what I just saw in a quake 2 timedemo these SUCK heh... in the middle of the timedemo the thing just slowed to a crawl and then sped back up... ended up with 144FPS... with the old drivers I had 203.

Edit again - Just ran the time demo a 2nd time and now got 210FPS. Hmm

It's staying @ about 210.9fps now... maybe my system did something in the background during the 1st one? Guess it was thinking about something. 😉

You get yours to work now?

i can't get mine installed on a retail All In Wonder Radeon. It gave me the same errors. I fixed the INF file like you and it still didn't work. pretty much killed my entire system and I had to do a system restore. I hope ATI is fixing this stuff soon.

ATI today renewed its commitment to providing high-quality, reliable graphics solutions by introducing CATALYST(TM), a software suite that includes unified driver and software applications to enable its RADEON(TM) family of graphics products.

Bwahahahaha! "High quality" = doesn't install -and/or- permanently damages your OS?

Nice to see they're trying to end the "no support for powered by ATI" garbage though.

I installed the reference drivers. only getting 3440 in 3dmark. people with similar configs all get over 4000... and some even have older drivers.

They probably overclocked their cards to get 4000. And if your card really is a one of those JoyTech SDR boards like Rand said, then it'll probably be slower than the regular DDR cards.
