How do I go about uninstalling IE6? I want to install another version but it keeps saying I have a newer version installed so it won't work. I checked add/remove programs (nothing there) and it isn't selected under Windows components .. so, any ideas?

you can't uninstall it. Even if you get to re-install 5.5 for example the core file will still be from IE6 the same goes for WMP if you install 7.1 and run mplayer2.exe and think you are running 6.4 Wrong, it's using the 6.4 skin but the 7.1 core files.

The only way is to format and re-install the OS with a previous version.

So is there any way to install an older version in addition to the new version? I want it for checking browser compatability and such for websites ..

You don't say what OS you're using, I assume Win2K since XP comes with IE 6. Try reverting back a SP level, I remember reading somewhere that if you install IE 6 and the SP in a certain order you'll have to revert the SP before you can revert IE.

Or you could look into running VMWare. It's a great piece of software that I use to run Windows programs on my Linux box, luckily I don't have to start it up very often =)

If you are using XP, and have SP1 installed, you can uninstall IE6 right in the add/remove programs menu. This was part of the Microsoft lawsuit settlement. I uninstalled Windows Messenger that way - but - :) - I happen lo like IE6.

Even with SP1 you can't remove IE, all it does is hide the icons a little more, it's really dumb.
