I'm going to be in this position before long... my parents want to sell the house that we live in right now within a year or so... so I have a little time, but I will have to find my own place when they do that. As of right now, I just graduated from high school and am looking for a job... so I hope to stay at home a little while longer, at least until I have had a job for a few months.

I'm freaked about vaulted ceilings. I have had 3 people tell me it will cost 10x more to heat and a/c. I doubt that.. but I dunno for sure

It's easily doable. I make less money than that, pay more for rent, and have a car payment too. I get by just fine. Go for it.

I was kidding. Work on your sense of humour and then move out. :)

But if you really want this, there really isn't anything anyone can say to change your mind. Just remember, it's a big step. Make sure you have it all thought out.

I've been to Atlanta, and if you are spending $35 a night on dinner you have expensive tastes and probably shouldn't move out on your own, or you will be rudely awaken.

and my tastes are that I like to eat at home but can't. If I buy food to prepare it is eaten by other people. If I eat other people's food I get bitched at.

It seems to me that you aren't quite ready to strike out on your own. $750 is a lot of money to be spending on entertainment and eating out everyday isn't helping you either. In order to move out on your own, you are going to need to make drastic changes in your lifestyle. I think its crazy that you make $1400 a month but have little more than a thousand dollars saved. Remember that you are not only gonna have to worry about feeding yourself, but also furnishing your apt, paying for utilities and rent, and also having enough saved in case you get hurt and can't work or your car breaks down.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from moving out, I did the same thing not too long agoand have not regretted it. But your spending habits do not seem to be the most fiscally sound. You are going to have to take a long hard look at your lifestyle and ask yourself if you are ready to give it up to live on your own.

1) If I had my own place my entertainment fund would be maybe $50.. if that.

2) The reason I do not have more saved is because I have only recently started working 40hrs/wk. I used to work 20hrs a week, and with eating out as much as I had to (because of not having my own place, and unable to eat at home) cost too much.

i say you move out and you have plenty of money to do so. the only problem is that you probably won't be able to find a company owned apartment that would rent out to you. they require your income to be 3 times the rent each person. this varies from place to place but i do know they are very strict. you will have to go find an apartment that is privately owned.

The last two apartments i've had, my income was about 1 and a half times the amount of rent per month, and the other, i didn't even have a job when i moved in. They were both owned by property companies.

I don't know why anyone is saying it wouldn't be doable.

You're in my exact situation, paying the same rent... I also pay $260/m for insurance and $120/month for car payment ontop of what you've listed for bills. I live very comfortably.

I lived in Atlanta for over a year. It certainly doesn't cost 35 dollars to eat out, unless you are going somewhere extremely nice. What kind of dope are you smoking... oh wait........................

I'm not sure how big of a place you are looking at, but I am in a 3 bedroom townhouse outside of Chicago. My utilities look something like this:

Digital Cable + Internet : 110
Phone: 30
Gas & electric: 80-90 (Gas is highest in winter at like 50-55 with electric being like 30-35 or so and in summer, gas is ~20 and electric is 60-70 depending on how hot it gets)
Township (water, trash pickup, blah blah blah): 70 every other month, so 35 a month
Renter's Insurance: 35
BTW, it's a two story townhouse with a finished basement (approx. 2000 square feet). Heating and cooling is forced air. Heat is kept at 65 when it is on, and AC is at 68 when it is on.

So I pay ~300 in utilities a month...150 after my roomie cuts me a check. We spend about $250 a month on food, groceries, cleaning supplies, whatever. This does not include eating out, but I could get by on the food I have here if I had to. All in all, plan on 200 a month (per person) for all food and grocery type things.

So....
Income (after tax): 1400
Rent: 367
Utilities (gas/electric/cable/phone/internet/etc.): 150
Food: 200

Leaving about $675 a month

You said you had your car and insurance taken care of, so...
Assuming you have no other expenses and nothing big happens, 575 (took out 100 a month for fuel) should be enough to save a bit and still have a good time

STAY AT HOME DUDE. TRUST ME. I know someone who is making 100K and staying at home. Staying at home is the best thing.

Seriously, it depends on how much you want to do it. If the question is, is it possible.. yes, it is.

I have an all inclusive apartment...

Rent - $330
Food - $250
Car - $120
Car/Apt Insurance - $20
Cable - $40
Phone - $35
Gas - $30
Misc - $50
--------
$875.

I think those are decent expenses for a 19 year old to handle. I work full time, of course. That leaves me about $600 dollars a month to spend/save/etc. I don't plan on doing this much longer, but for everyone saying you can't do it.... you can. And comfortably. I eat a lot of nice foods, and can afford to go out for food or a movie. Mind you, when I moved out... I had a bit of money saved and I bought all my expensive "toys" before leaving. .. Car, Camera, Guitar.. etc.

I make about $1400 a month.. rent bringing that down to $1050. I have no car payments at all, and my insurance is nill.

Work hard.. never stop looking for a better job... or if you have plans for school, save up... etc...You'll do FINE.
