Anyone know the answer to this question.....sometimes when you download a video or song off of the net, you can't skip to the middle. You are forced to watch or listen to the whole damn thing until it gets to the part you want to. Is it from the way it's encoded? Is there anyway around it?

Alright, I definitely need more details for this one.

I know for Divx Movies, it's hard to jump around, and that depends entirely on the software you are using. So, give me more info. here? And for mp3 files, also depends on what your using. For example, never experienced that in WinAmp. But in Kazaa, the built in player sux for previewing or playing songs. And it most of the time won't allow you to jump around in the song.

Gobadgrs....send more info my way.

Yea Kazaa it does it in, but WMP too. Ive never had a problem with MPG but I have had problems with AVIs and ASFs.....nothing worse then downloading pron and having to wait for the money shot ;)

I have some car videos from Top Gear that are like that.

The square in the slider bar is grayed out and you just have to watch the whole clip.

I want to jump to the racing part dangit! or at least be able to jump back a few seconds.

Well...........there's your answer, stop downloading Pron :p

Actually, now I DO know what your talking about. I dunno, I don't have those problems anymore. I install whatever codecs I need on my computer, and just use WMP 6.4 for all my DIVX/AVI files. (If you have Win2k or XP, just go to Start-->Run-->mplayer2. This should open up Windows Media Player 6.4. This is my default player for all these files. It's smaller, and does the exact same thing.)

Hope this helps.

Is it cause I have WMP 7.1? I have a couple simpsons and SNL episodes that dont let you jump around either and they are AVIs. I have WMP setup for auto codec download.....where can you find more codecs?

my guess is prolly that the header has some info saying the file is this long, and if the file isnt "this long" then it wont let u skip to that point if the file isnt "this long" in total (incomplete download). OR, it mite be that certain formats of video dont have the timecode in them to let u skip around.

I have tons of videos like that (donwload video streams... mainly asf and asx files). I think its the way it was encoded or as someone else said that the header has some wrong information... I'm thinking you can probably re-encode (or whatever its called) it with virtual dub so that you will be able to skip around but personally I'm too lazy for that. I noticed that if you watch the file in Kazaa though usually you can skip around...
