Can't Setup HP Print Server

I have a used HP Jetdirect 170x print server that I want to use on my network to work with an HP 6L laserjet. The printserver will spit out its ip address, lan hw address, and host name. I know the print server is in great working condition. However, the HP software cannot find it on my network even though I have all the data it calls for. I am doing the setup for the printer from a hardwired computer working off the same Linksys switch that the print server is connected to.

This is being done on a system running XP. I also have the firewall turned off.

My wireless network is setup as 'Smith', and my network is called "Smith Home'. I can see all my computers on the network.


Any suggestions?

1. Check your current internal IP set up, in XP at the command prompt type ipconfig/all - if it is (say) 192.168.1.XXX, go into the printer's control panel and manually assign a fixed IP of 192.168.1.YYY < a large number so that it does not conflict with other pcs on your network. Make sure that the first 3 sets of digits are exactly the same. Sub net should also be the same - 255.
2. After making the changes, reboot the pcs, while the printer is on. Get on any any pc and at the command prompt >ping [printer address] see if you get a response.
3. If everything goes well, at each pc install the printer as a Local not network printer. Here's how you install it: Control Panel > Printers>add>Local>ports>TCP/IP port> type in IP address > so on.

Please report back with the error messages.

Havent worked with HP 6Ls in the last five years, but I am fairly sure that you cannot assign it a IP address manually. That will have to be done on the Jet direct print server (refer to its manual or online at hp.com)
