Can't Set Monitor to native resolution (and fill the screen)

I got a new monitor (Hanns-G HH251) along with a new computer. However I can't set the monitor to its native resolution 1920x1080 (and fill the screen).

Basically it allows me to set the resolution, but there is about an inch of screen space around the picture that isn't being used. When I change the resolution to 1680x1050 it fills the monitor, but the picture is blurred.

It appears to be a problem with either the GPU or the drivers.
It is a 512MB 4850 with HDMI/VGA/DVI out NewEgg Market

I've tried a different computer and it displays the full screen at 1920x1800 With out any problems.

Right now, I'm using the included DVI-HDMI adapter for the monitor, and I have tried the VGA cable.

Did you by any chance recieve a driver cd with your moitor? certain models do need that installed before they function correctly
also was the second PC you tried it on one with the same OS? a later version might have had the drivers preinstalled
also try updating your graphics drivers

The drivers for the monitor were installed, and the ATI driver is v9.8 which according to ATI's website is the most up to date.

The other computer was using Windows XP

What is the OS on the first computer then?

Have you tried changing the refresh rate? Also, check in the ATi settings, make sure that it is seeing the monitor as a monitor and not a TV, it might be trying to apply some sort of overscan to it that is messing up the works.

The original computer has windows 7 professional from MSNDAA. I have changed the refresh rate, (nothing happens)

Where do I need to check to see if the output is as a monitor instead of a TV. ATI control panel or windows 7 settings?

Thanks!

It would most likely be in the ATi Control Panel, or whatever they call it.

I can't see any reviews on that card that mention this problem, so either no one else is using it with a 1920*1080 monitor, or this is an isolated problem.

So, thus far you have tried it on HDMI, DVI and VGA?

What ports have you tried on the monitor?

I can not adjust the screen settings to stretch the image (i've tried).

The monitor has 2 HDMI ports and 1 VGA. I have tried a DVI->HDMI (in both ports) adapter that came with the monitor (which gives the border around the screen) and I have tried the VGA connection (the image is just too big can't shrink it enough to fit the monitor). I have tried just an HDMI cable (same thing)

Another thing that is throwing me off, when I set the resolution inside a game to 1920x1080 it fills the screen with no problem.

Here are some pictures of the problem.

I guess it might be some sort of problem with Windows 7 and that combination of drivers/hardware/monitor. The fact that games will fill the screen, and that it isn't working on any of the ports leads me to believe that if anything is the cuplrit (beyond odd combination of fail) it is the ATi stuff.

Have you tried uninstalling the ATi stuff and just using the Windows 7 ATi drivers? They may be out of date compared to ATi, but they will give you an idea.

I have rolled back to just windows 7 driver and the same thing happens... Do you think I should RMA the GPU? or Monitor, could it be a problem there?

equipojesus - Did you get this issue resolved? I'm also currently running a HANNS-G HH251 and am experiencing exactly the same thing! GFX: (Onboard) ATI Radeon 4200 HD, OS: Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Some monitors have this issue. Sort of a long story, but they are discussed on Tom's Hardware.

I picked up a KDS at a church sale with a similar issue (probably the reason why it was dumped). Here's how one person fixed as reported on Tom's & it also worked for me:

"The solution I found was to disconnect the monitor before rebooting and connecting it afterwords. I also dezactivated DDC/CI from monitor's menu. Hope this helps (I use an Intel video card)"

(Note:Other people found custom resolution settings in the graphics control panel that solved their issue.)

PS: Once I got the KDS to switch to native, I never had an issue thereafter. Some people reported that when this happens it's actually a defect in the monitor as they ordered 80 of them (Acers in their case) and some of them just wouldnt go into native resolution. See below:

"Its the monitor itself that is the problem. At my job they have a few hundred of this model monitor and for whatever it will just stop displaying 1440x900. We tried forcing the resolution under the intel display properties but the screen would flicker and be distorted.

The monitor is just junk and the manufacturer doesnt want to admit a problem. Switching to another of the same model will let you select 1440x900, until that monitor eventually fails."

Hmmm! None of the Picture references work. Looks like the monitor itself doesn't know its own aspect ratio.

I had exactly that problem with my new Hanns-G HH251 monitor. What I did was go to the ATI Website and grab the detect and install executable and run it to get the correct drivers -- I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 (RV770).

Before installing anything, however, I went into the device manager and not only unloaded the existing drivers, but deleted them as well.

THEN, I installed Catalyst Driver 12-6-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql for WIndows 7 64 bit and Hydravision package 12-6-legacy_vista_win7_32-64_hydravision 08.00.0877 that goes with it.

Once those were installed, I rebooted the machine to get a clean load. I then right-cliced on the desktop and brought up the AMD Vision Control Center. In there, there are several settings options you can play with to get things just how you want them or change things you can activate via hotkeys, etc. for specific applications. But once I rebooted, the display came up perfectly at it's recommended resolution of 1920x1080 (plugged in via HDMI Cable), it fills the screen completely, and I have had no further issues. It's GORGEOUS!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
