Can't see computers after installing router

My apartment has an included internet service (sucks) wherein all the computers are connected to a LAN, which has access to the internet meaning that we can all share files/game. I just bought a laptop and had a wireless/cat5 router lying around so i decided to connect that to my room's ethernet port. Now, with the desktop connected to the router via cable and the laptop via wireless, the two computers can see eachother. I can't, however, see the computers on the apartment's LAN - though i could before i installed the router. Dunno how to fix that.

memnoc,
I think you over complicated the scenario: By adding a Wireless router you have setup a separate LAN via the Wireless Router in your apartment thus a connection between your two PC's the Laptop and the Desktop. However, the Router separates your network from the wider Apartment's LAN. I think you want to look at setting up a Wireless Peer to Peer connection between your two stations that should allow you to share Internet and Files and still see the other systems on the Apartment LAN:

Great Info on setting up your own Wirless Network:

In otherwords you need to disconnect the router: Purchase a wireless Ethernet card for your Desktop if you don't have one: < $50 bucks and then setup the Peer to Peer connection between your two systems.

I hope this helps. . . This is my best suggestion based upon your example: It is possible someone else knows how to make your Wireless router work in your current scenario but from what I've looked at I think you would be best suited for a simple peer to peer network:

Thanks:

hadn't even considered that So thanks alot. I sorta wanted to have multiple computers connect (like if a friend comes over) but this is probably a better way. Anyway, I found a wireless network in my area that has a faster cable connection so I might piggy-back on that for the time being. Thanks again for you help.
