Can't run NVIDIA 6800 at 1600x1200

I have a Compaq 7550 monitor that supports 1600x120 resolution, but I get a "The resolution is too high error message" whenever I try to set the monitor at 1600x1200 resolution. I also have a X800 Pro and the monitor runs fine at 1600x1200 on the ATI card, but it can't run at the same resolution on NVIDIA 6800 vanilla card.

A while back, I installed and reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers 10 times before this resolution worked, but not anymore. Can someome tell me what I should do to fix this issue? Thx.
 
X800 Pro is not the fastest. Check out AnandTech reviews and you will see that 6800 vanilla wins in all tests.

Yes, I have cleaned the system from old drivers.
 
Eh, I just did look at some anandtech reviews and it seemed the 6800GT was only slightly better than the x800 pro, so I can't see how a vanilla one can be better...

um, are u kidding me? 6800 vanilla does not win in all the tests, nor does it beat the x800 pro in the majority of it. the x800 pro is faster.
 
mikey is right, plus if that x800pro if vivo is can be flashed to xt. looks like u wasted money
 
it could be a refresh rate problem.. try different options for it in desktop mode to see which you can display in that combination.
from display properties - settings - advanced - adapter - list modes. (or something like this)
also changable from within the geforce driver tab under advanced settings. override the defaults for working ones.

btw. mik3y and especially malak. just help the guy instead of hijacking the thread with spam. he'll see for himself what suits him better.
"Put the x800 pro back in. " is not an acceptable answer, too arrogant & fanboyish.

I downloaded the drivers for the monitor and now everything works fine. Thanks for all the help.

By the way, I have both cards so I don't think I wasted my money. Secondly, please check out the link and tell me what you think.

Yes, sometimes X800 Pro was nearly as fast as the 6800GT, but other times it was much slower than 6800 vanilla. Besides, X800 Pro loses more times than 6800 vanilla between the two.
 
those old benchies were based on old ati drivers, which had a great impact on its performance. based on more recent drivers and benchmarks, this is a much more reliable group of benchies.

also, i'm no fanboy of any card company. i like whichever's better. 🙂
 
I'm 99% sure an x800 pro is faster then a 6800 vanilla. Except for maybe Doom.

Before anyone calls me a fanboy, I'm currently using a 6800GT @ ultra. I'm not an ATI, or nVidia fan, I'm a performance fan period.
 
don't listen to these ATI ramblers

Most likely it's because the refresh rate is not supported by the monitor.

Make sure you have the latest monitor & VGA driver. (must uninstall prev. drivers)

Then try going to 1600x1200 @75Hz ... if it works, go to 85Hz, and so on.

It's really annoying people don't offer good suggestion to fix the problem, but instead beetching on ATI vs NVIDIA dUH!

I'm using my 4yo Geforce2 and my resolution is 1600x1200 @100Hz... no big deal!
 
It's not an ATI vs nvidia fight like some people are trying to make it out to be. We aren't fanboys, we simply see a quicker easier, more beneficial solution with the given resources. He already has the x800 pro, it's faster than the 6800, the 6800 is having issues where the x800 pro isn't, so the clear solution is put the x800 pro in. That isn't arrogant or fanboyish, it's practical. If it were a 6800GT or 6800U, then I'd look into solutions to fixing it, but in this case he already has a better video card available.
