need some help with drivers issues and Direct X. I have a Gainward GeForce 2 Ti/500 Gold VIVO card (the one recommended by Anand last month in the Nvidia card roundup) running on a brand new system and Windows XP. Everytime the system tries to use direct draw it screws up the screen and then after 30 sec or so the system restarts and Windows makes that error reporting to to Microsoft. Each time I check the details and it says it was a video driver issue in the NV4_disp.dll. I have tired 4 different drivers for this card (the one from MSFT, the one on the CD, the newest on Gainward's web site and the Detonator series 28.32) I get the same problem each time. This happens when I run a game or just test the direct draw and direct 3d in DX diagnostic program. Anyone out there have any clues on why this is a problem.

System build is a follows
AMD XP1800
EPOX 8kha+ MB
256MB crucial ram
WIN XP home edition OEM
WD 40GB hard drive 7200 rpm
Gainward GeFroce 2 Ti/500 Gold edition board not running overclocked
Linksys 10/100 NIC
SB Audigy sound card
Plextor 24x10x40 CDRW
Toshiba 12X DVD

3 case fans (heat is not a problem, highest I have seen so far is 45 deg C on the processor and 30 deg C in the case)

Any and all help is appreciated. This is really kicking my ....

No luck, I downloaded the drivers and installed them. Still locks up. Dxdiag fails when it tries to go to full screen. Also, the refresh rate changes to a mode not supported by my monitor, or just stops sending a singnal. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the first one.

Install the latest monitor driver, did you have Gainward drivers in there first then installed Nvidia drivers without removing the old Gainward ones first since this would cause driver problems, try minimum hardware setup ,you should disable all video shadowing in bios, also since you are using the SB Audigy, make sure onboard sound in bios is disabled, plus I disabled the game and Midii port address as well(in bios) on my Epox 8KHA+ board.

I did disable all the stuff in the bios, but am having a really hard time finding out how to uninstall the Gainward drivers. Any ideas on where to do this would be helpfull.

MAS5,go to Control panel, system icon and then hardware tab select device manager and click on the "display adaptor " and right click with mouse on your Gainward card in there and select properties you will see a new menu open up and click on the driver tab with select the option to "uninstall drivers".If you still get problems it`s either going into the registry and removing all the registry entries which is not recommended for beginners or reformat and do another clean install of OS.

I prefer to stick with Nvidia drivers rather then the brand drivers like Gainward,Leadtek etc.
