I'm getting freezes every time I try to run games in fullscreen mode, whereas borderless mode works on the games that support it. Happens regardless of which driver I'm using (tried 16.11, 17.7.1, and 17.7.2).

Could it be a Windows Update that is causing these issues?

Anyone else running into this issue?

Could be updates, could be file corruption, could be many things.

The easiest way to troubleshoot this is to clean install the OS again (or, if you don't want to do that, clean install the OS to another partition just to see if that works.)

If that fixed it, you know what must be done. If not, well, try DDU, and clean install the drivers again for starters.

I use DDU every time I change the driver. I "kinda" got it to work by uninstalling some Visual C++ runtimes using 17.7.2, but had to revert to 16.11 again since unofficial overclocking mode doesn't work with 17.7.2, and I need that. This time the game, Dirt Rally in this case, started but any change to fullscreen caused a black screen.

These are Steam games.

Test the game without overclocking. Does it still crash?

You might try going into Dirt Rally settings and let it auto-detect the correct settings. The full screen settings might have an invalid refresh, resolution, ...? that are ignored for windowed mode because that must use the desktop settings.

I had this issue with a number of games on my test/lab PC with windows 10. The Witcher 3 for example would not open when in full screen, it would just minimize to the system tray and not go fullscreen. Other games, like GTA V would just show a black screen when entering full screen from borderless window. I tried multiple tweaks for days, but the only fix that I found was reinstalling the OS.
