I have been having some problems and getting the error mesage "frequency over range" so I tried to change my refresh on my monitor and that didn't work so I tried to at least defrag my C: drive but every time I try to start defrag my system will hang and stop reponding. I then hit Ctrl,Alt,Del and instead of my close program screen coming up it goes automaticly to the Blue screen that says hit any key to continue. Which doesn't respond either and I need to then re-boot.

My Mcafee virus sheild is a few years old and I was thinking I might have a virus.

I also tried to run scan disk but after about 1 minute of running that program also stopped running.

Does anyone know why I can't run defrag or scan disk? When I re-boot it starts right back up again with out a problem though.

have you tried running a scandisk and defrag in DOS?
boot up your comp. using a Win98 floppy (or whatever OS you have) and try it there.
also, you might want to get Norton Anti-Virus istead of McAfee since i've found out Norton can pick up virus's that MacAfee doesn't.

Does your system freeze or does it just hang. The reason i ask is, if you have an older computer, when you defrag or run scandisk, it takes forever so it might look as if it's not doing anything.

As for the virus theory, if you're worried about that, go to www.mcafee.com. They have a free online scanning utility. It'll scan your drive but won't clean it. While you're there, you might as well download the newest virus definitions.

When you get the blue screen and hit a key to continue, the one of the reasons why it doesn't do anything is because you computer is busy in the background,ie. running defrag.

BTW, in your freq settings, try choosing "optimal" and see if that helps.

I have mine set to 'optimal', usually allways works.

Not sure about this one. Are you running a lot of apps in the background (antivirus, etc.?) If it were me, I would first let the antivirus program check every file on the HD. The turn off the a/v program and every other app. Run scandisk with the thorough option selected as you may have some bad clusters and Windows wants to report this to you under defrag but stops responding due to some bugware on your comp.

Then maybe uninstall/reinstall the antivirus program.
