Can't retrieve data from DVD-R, PC keeps freezing

Folks,
I have here with me a burned DVD-R, recorded about 2-3 years ago. Despite the fact I can't see any risks or the disc was not even used, I can't copy all the data to my Hard Drive. I am using a fast CPU and Windows 7/32 bit but I still get my computer totally unresponsive after I try to do that.

So I can't copy the whole disc to my Hard Drive, I guess it's somehow damaged, despite the fact I can't see examining the surface.

Is there a program I might use to retrieve the data? Or even a way to attempt copying those files without having to force the ejection of the disc from my drive repeatedly pressing the Eject button?

I thought Win7 had this thing fixed, then again we have defective discs that can stop everything we are doing in the computer until we remove them. In the past I had to reset the system. Yeah, I think we are improving now...

Take your disk and try it in at least several different brands of DvD RW drives. Go to the public library and try to read the whole disk in one of the available machines. Go from machine to machine if necessary till you try them all. Also try from a friend's notebook too. You would be shocked at how finicky optical drives are with reading non-commercial media.

The funny thing is that a single file with 70 MB can't be copied. But all the rest of files (about 4 GB of data) is OK. I compared the MD5 hash from all of them (generated and compared), and this is really the only file that can't be copied.

I will check with another drive, but I am sceptical about it.

Edit: tested with 2 notebooks, didn't worked either. Same problem...
