hello all,

did a fresh winXP install on my cousin's computer, but it can't seem to get onto roadrunner.

using the same cable modem and ethernet cable, it connects fine from my computer, but it won't work with my cousin's.

when i do IPCONFIG and stuff on my cousin's, the IP address goes ok, but there's no gateway address and no DNS servers listed, and I have everything on auto sensing.

This was using the onboard LAN. The same thing happened when i installed a 3COM NIC.

what's going on?

*EDIT* ok problem is fixed. i brought the computer back to my cousin's house and it works fine for some reason. oh well.

thanks for everything, people!

some broadband companies need some form of authentication to work.

1) Mac-address
2) Computer name
3) PPPoE username/password

Try changing the computername to be the same as the one that works?

i don't think it's that. the same problem happened at my cousin's house with his broadband (he just got optimum online) and i'm pretty sure if i brought my computer to his house it will work.

is there something up with my cousin's computer?

Going back to what Spidey said, are you sure Roadrunner doesn't require you to register your MAC address? It's very strange that our cousin's computer can get an IP address via DHCP from the ISP, but not get a gateway or DNS servers. All that information is sent at the same time in the DHCP process. Do you have a router you could stick in there just to test if that will work?

ahhh, it's getting a 169.x.x.x IP address, which means it ain't working.

yeah, i'm gonna go to his house and call up optimum and ask them about authentication and such.

most of the cable companies require your MAC address to be registered. THis is almost certainly the reason.

call them up, add the MAC and they will have you reboot your modem(you can try rebooting the modem before calling, after you plugged in her computer)

Most? Hmmm... this hasn't been the experience with the two cable companies I've used - They were both just plug and play anywhere. Just my $.02
