can't remove back plane (used for the RS232, PS2 ports, audio connectors ....)

Hello
I was trying to move my components from my old computer case to a new computer case, when i tried to remove the mobo form my old computer case, something held the mobo in place, all the screws were out, i am pretty sure it was the back plane(rectangular alumnum(?) plate with perforations for RS232, audio, USB ....) that prevented me from removing it. is there a way i can remove the backplane.

also the back plane for my new case (antec sonata does nto match my mobo's connections. if i remeber correctly i had received 3 or more back planes with my old computer case, i was wondering if i could use the back plane for my old computer case in my antec sonata computer case?

The backplane should not stop you, are you sure you have removed all of the motherboard screws? There are often 6 of them, two each at top, middle, bottom of board.

Once you remove the motherboard from the case, you can "pop out" the backplane / IO shield and install it into the new case.

there were 9 screws on my mobo and i removed them all, the mobo was sliding but it ws held in place by that backplane/ IO shield.

i actually tried to remove the IO shield of the antec sonata and could not do it. i wanted to remove it since the shields for the old and new case need to be swapped.

is there a way i can pop the IO shield

you mean out of the case not into the case.

also should i remove the I/O shield of my old case with the mobo still attached to the case or should i try and remove the screws of the mobo and then try to remove both of them (mobo and I/O shield) at the same time. i did try to remove them last night at the same time, but it seemed to be stressing out the connectors(i think it was the parallel connector) on the mobo

surprisingly the antec sonata came with only one type of I/O shield, i remember my old unbranded case had three different types of I/O shields.

yippie i got it out of my antec sonata case.

now for the tough one. the I/O shield attached to the mobo in my unbranded case, you guys think i can just pull out my mobo( with the I/O shield still stuck to the mobo) out of the old case, or should i remove the IO shield from the case(by pushing it out) and then remove the mobo?

You have to find out what is actually holding your mobo to the I/O shield - get the mobo free. Maybe one of your port screws came loose and you tightened it with the shield in between or something like that.
. Then the I/O shield can be removed to put in the new case. It is removed by popping it toward the INSIDE of the case. You will bend the crap out of it if you try to push it from the inside - out. Not good if you need to reuse it. I repeat, you pop the I/O shield from the OUTSIDE - IN.

. You then install the shield in your new case from the INSIDE - OUT.

yep, push IN to the case to REMOVE the IO shield

to install the IO shield, place it inside the case, push OUT to snap it into place

thanks for clewaring up my confusions

ah, with my antec sonata i pushed the IO shield from inside to out, and it did bend quite a bit. (pushed the IO shield out of the case)

so i should have pushed it from outside to in.

with regards to my old computer case, do you guys mean to say that the mobo is not fastened to the IO shield in any way,
and once i had removed the screws of the mobo, the mobo should have lifted off without the IO shield?

if that is the case, then one solution comes to mind

1. i will unscrew the port screws(will that cause any harm) of all the IO connectors. and then there will be nothing holding back the mobo.

2. i can them remove the IO shield by pushing the shield into the cavity of case

3. plug the IO shield into the antec sonata from inside out (holding the shield against the case and pushing out)

4. once done, i can place my mobo and screw the mobo in after aligning with the IO shield.

do i have the steps right?

Yes, but you don't have to take the screws out of your serial/parallel ports etc. They normally don't get hung up in the I/O shield.

Listen to Zepper -- the ports on the motherboard were just pushed through the cutout holes in the IO shield, you should be able to detach the motherboard by pulling it away from the shield, towards the front of the case.

You probably just tried to lift the motherboard up, instead of pulling it sideways / to the right.

that could have been it,
i probably tried to pull the mobo up instead of slipping it out sideways

i just thought that maybe one of the screws was caught on the IO shield, and if i removed the screws, the mobo would slide out.

it is just that last time when i tried moving the mobo, the mobo was moving but it was dragging the shield with it, and one of the edges of the shield was still attached to the case.
