Can't remember the name of a movie

I am trying to figure out the name of a movie I watched years ago on TV. It was a black and white movie that was about a normal town. One day something crashed just outside of town (i think they thought it was a meteor). Soon after the temperature started rising more and more. Whatever it was that landed was causing the heat. Eventually the aliens or whatever it was started going into the town and would kill people, with their heat, if I remember correctly.

That's all I can remember, and I could be remembering things wrong. If anyone can think of the name of this movie, I would appreciate it!

The Blob? One of the early War of the Worlds featured heat rays, too.

It's not war of the worlds (almost positive), it could be The Blob, I'll have to check that out.

I think I remember someone doing some welding which attracted the creature? I duno if that helps anyone.
