I came home tonight to find my primary 200GB hard drive "dead" ;x

It detects fine in the bios, but I can't seem to access it at all.. I tried running the western digital data lifeguard tools but it gave me a read error on the test, and to contact WD Support.

i put my old 4.3 gb hd and installed windows xp.. put the 200 gb hd as slave.. it popped up and detected the hard drive in windows, but does not appear in the disk managment.

I have a lot of important data i need to retrieve.. any other ideas before I try the 'freezer' trick and RMAing it?

thanks.

If the 200 GB had a ntfs partition...

Try "GetBackData for NTFS"

Its free, and works wonders.

I had the same drive fail on me last week. It would crash the Data Lifeguard util so couldn't get any info from the disk. My friend also had the same drive fail several months ago (click o' death). I wonder if WD shipped a bad batch of these drives. Both were bought from Dell.
