Can't read burned cd's on other PC's

I posted this in the peripherals forum, but thought I'd add it here too. A friend has been burning cd's, and he can only read them on the machine that burned them, either in the cd burner, or the cd reader. But only on that machine. He can't read them on his other PC's cd player. Any thoughts?

It must be a limitation of the cdrom in his second computer (wont read cd-rs) try it in another macine to be sure. Some cd-rom drives wont read 700MB discs because the laser dosnt go that far to the edge of the disc.

Both excellent points.

hifimaster: I'll have him bring the cd's in and see if I can read them.

Blackflagg: He mentioned he's using EZCD, and used the "Allow cd to be read on any machine" option. I'm thinking this is EZCD's way of closing the session, but since I use Nero and not EZCD, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the fast replies!

He's not sure about packet writing. But since he's using the "Enable cd to be read from any machine" option, I wouldn't think so. But like I said, I don't use EZCD, so it's possible. He said he inserts a cd into his player (cd1), and drags and drops the files (using EZCD) for burning (cd2). He can then read them in either cd1 or cd2 on that machine only. He cannot read them on his older Dell.

Hmmm, another thing here is perhaps he's making a 'backup' of a game?

There's CD copy protection out there (Safedisc for one) that makes life VERY frustrating when doing backups. For instance, you might be able to make a successful copy...BUT it ONLY works sporadically.

No, nothing copy protected. Some mpegs and other data files, but he's not trying to copy a copy protected cd or anything. And these are definately CD-Rs, and not CD-RWs he's having problems with.

Thanks again for all the great input. I'm going to see if my pc can read them. If so, then it has to be his old cd drive in his Dell.

i have this problem too, its the cdroms on other comps, especially if you have one of those emachine or compaq, lately the cdroms they come with suck, and wont read the cdr. just buy a new cdrom, its not that expensive and you could always use an extra if its not the case.
