Can't play on server!

Help!! I have a laptop and a desktop which are networked together. When I try to play Half-Life using the desktop as the server, the laptop cannot join it. It only works if the laptop acts as the server. I don't want it to be the server since it sucks and only has 64 megs of RAM.
