Can't play any downloaded .mvk files with VLC...

Odd issue which I see posted numerous times online but I am not finding a solution with the most current version of VLC.

Started today. I downloaded a mvk file and it will start up in VLC and stops a second later.

I have existing mvk files on my computer that play fine...

Can anyone recommend a way to either debug or troubleshoot?

I have uninstalled rebooted and reinstalled with no help.

MKV is just a container, the culprit is most likely the codec is borked. Uninstall any codec packs (CCCP, KLite, etc), uninstall VLC, restart the PC, reinstall VLC.

Personally, i'm so tired of troubleshooting codecs in 2013 that I just install VLC and MPC side by side. Generally any video that acts up in one works fine in the other. It's worth a shot to at least see if its the video itself or something else.

that is a good plan, I forgot about trying MPC...I will give that a go...I would presume if the file doesn't play in either it isn't the player(s) it would be the file at that point.

Also try Splayer, PotPlayer (yes, it's a dumb name, but a good piece of software) and Mirillis Splash (Pro is the best, with hardware decoding enabled).

See if you can find any portable versions which would let you try the software without having to install it...
