Can't play a DVD-R

Probably a dumb question, but I've been away from the "techie" side of computers for awhile now. Sorry.

So, every media player I've tried gives this message. I see DVD decoders for $15 or so, but is there a better way? Or should I just pay for a decoder?

WMP 10 and 11 play DVDs just fine. Is your drive reasonably current?
