Can't Ping

Sorry about that . . . hit the wrong button and sent it before I included my problem.

I am trying to recover a system hit by the W32-SirCam virus. By all reports, I have the virus removed, but am having problems trying to connect to anything outside the computer.

I have RoadRunner, and go through a LinkSys router. I can run IPCONFIG and it reports my IP address on my LAN correctly, and gives me the DNS numbers for RoadRunner's server. When I try to ping, it can't find anything. Needless to say, it can't go anywhere either on the LAN or in the Internet.

I have tried reinstalling the operating system (Win98SE) and even upgraded it to WinME. I can ping 127.0.0.1 and it works, but everything else returns a time out message. While in Internet Explorer, which is configured to look for the Internet on my LAN, I can tell it to go some where and watch the router lights as I hit the Enter key, and it doesn't try to do anything.

Any suggestions short of reformatting and starting all over again?

If you're running a software firewall program, try unloading and re-installing it. Most put some flavor of re-direction in the stack to route the packet through the evaluation process. If that system is "disconnected" somewhere in the middle, your packets aren't making it back into the calling program/process.

Just a thought....

What's the default gateway set to? And when was the last time your DHCP lease was renewed? (before your problem or after?)
