can't ping my computer from local network

So my local network consists of several computers connected through a netgear wireless hub. For some reason, it all works fine, except I can't ping my computer from my roommate's computer on the local net. I can get online, chat on aim, all that stuff just fine. But if I set up an ftp server on my computer, it is not accessable from the local net. You can't browse to my computer from "my network places", and you can't ping my computer but I can ping other computers from my computer. The windows firewall is disabled. I also got the most recent ethernet drivers. Any ideas?

Windows firewall may be disabled but there is a firewall blocking ports somewhere and very likely installed on your computer, whether the native XP firewall or 3rd party.

how can i check on this? what ports would it be blocking?

There are several different vendors who provide software firewalls. Some may even be bundled with a "catch all" security solution from a larger vendor. Such as Norton, Symantec, McAfee, Trend, Sophos, etc....

yeah, i checked into that. the only possibility is norton, because I have Norton Systemworks 2005, but that doesn't include any firewall. I don't have any firewall software installed on here.

SystemsWorks 2005 does have a firewall bundle. Though I think it is a seperate CD. Obviously uninstalling Norton and rebooting is a much easier solution than re-formatting. Even if that does not solve your problem, you've wasted 10 minutes. Formatting without trying to uninstall Norton's craptabulous software is a bit more wasted time if it's not needed.

there is a software firewall somewhere. If you think it's quicker to reformat then troubleshoot though, then I guess that's your best option.

Wasn't there a motherboard or video card that had built in firewall? Maybe yours does?
