Can't paste into Wordpad...

We have some computers that can do this and some that can't and we want to figure out why so we can make them ALL do this.

If we highlight something from a web page that is in table form and paste it into Wordpad, on some computerds it pastes just fine, and on other computers nothing happens. For a test, do a Select All on this page you are reading now, then do a copy. Now open your Wordpad and Paste and see if it does anything. It doesn't work on the machine I'm sitting at now (it thinks and cranks for a fwe seconds but nothing happens) but it does work on a co-worker's PC. What it should do is paste all the data but without the pictures or font formatting, but it shoudl keep the data in the table type structure. It works on some PCs we have and not on others even though they are all about the same.

We are running Win 2k and Ie 5.5 and have the same Wordpad version on all machines as well.

Anyone have any idea about this?

Thanks.

Same here. However, if I do a paste special in Wordpad and select unformatted text, it works.

That's exactly the problem. On one PC it works going straight to Wordpad NOT using paste special and on others it doesn't. No one can seem to figure out why....

hmmm... I tried it again.
From Opera, I can do select all and paste into notepad & wordpad with no problem.
From IE6, I can only paste into notepad. Nothing happens when I paste into wordpad.

The quote below is taken from a newsgroup in 2002...

The copy and paste function from Internet Explorer 6 or
Outlook Express 6 to Wordpad does not work properly.
This same problem is cropping up in other forums by
different people. As far as I know, no one has come up
with a solution yet. I have been trying to find a solution
to this problem, and in doing so, I now believe that the
problem is not a problem with my Wordpad program at all.
The problem, I believe, is with "Internet Explorer".

Why do I say this? Because I can copy text from web pages
and paste into Wordpad when using Netscape. I can also
open up web pages that are on my hard drive with other
programs, such as Microsoft Word or Dreamweaver, and
the "copy and paste" function works just fine from those
programs to Wordpad. Only when I am using the IE browser,
or open web pages from my hard drive with IE, (which is my
default HTML viewer), the problem exists. The problem
exists in Outlook Express 6 as well. I can't copy text
from e-mail messages and paste into Wordpad either.

This tells me that the problem must be with IE. I recently
upgraded to IE6 on January 23, 2002. I noticed the problem
shortly thereafter, but when I did notice it, I just
assumed that the problem was with the Wordpad program
itself, never dreaming the problem could be with the
upgrade to IE6.

I can use the "Paste Special" under the Edit tab, and it
will paste in Wordpad as "unformatted text". Also, if I
close the IE window that I copied from "before" I try to
paste to Wordpad, it will paste everytime without using
the Paste Special, but again, as "unformatted text". The
RTF (Rich Text Format) paste function when copied from IE
or OE will not work when trying to paste into Wordpad.
The interesting part in this is the following...

if I close the IE window that I copied from "before" I try to
paste to Wordpad, it will paste everytime
This works!

Well that doesn't seem to work. When you close IE and then do the paste, it's the same as doing a Paste Special Unformatted Text. I want to do the Paste as the Rich Text Format so it keeps the table formating. I also tried Netscape 4.78 and when that pastes it also just does a Unformatted Text paste...
