Cant open .avi file with DIVX Player 2.0 Alpha

Sorry, I am very new to divx. I have a divx file that is .avi; I can open it fine with Windows Media Player 7.0, but when I open it with the divx player 2.0 I get a "cannot open file" message. Do I have to do something else to get it to work? TIA

That happened to me too, but it only happens to some of my avi files. I updated to the new player 2 alpha 2.0 but didn't test if that fixed the problem. You might try getting the player 2.0 alpha 2 update released on 3-14-02 if you're still using the player that is bunbled with divx 5.0, it could fix the problem.

No, that was the first thing I tried and it didnt fix it. What is the best program to use for .avi files? Because Windows Media Player 7.0 looks horrible. Would Power DVD play them?

Did you try using the old divx player that came with divx 4.12 codec? I noticed that the old divx could play some avi files the new one couldn't play. I'm using wmp 7.1 with divx 5.0 because the level of quality seems the same to me and sometimes better than with the player 2. At the start the wmp quality may look a little worst than the player 2.0 but after 3-4secs the quality kicks in and looks just as good.

For me the quality in wmp is not real great, but it could be because I have a geforce 2. I will try an old version of divx player.
