Can't OC a QX6600 on a Foxconn nForce 680i ?

QX6600
Foxconn N68S7AA 680i SLI motherboard
2 eVGA 8800s
4x 1GB 1066 MHz Corsair Dominator
Thermaltake 720 tower
Thermaltake 1200 W Toughpower
Windows XP Pro 64-bit

I have to say I've been pretty disappointed with this system thus far - most of my desktop applications are slower/flakier than my Athlon XP that had 512 megs of ram.

One problem I have is when I up the bus speed to get the QX6600 to 2.9 GHz, when I post I get an error message like "A 266 MHz processor has been detected and is not supported by this board. The processor will run but will be very slow." Which is accurate - still boots, but then the computer runs REALLY slow.

What gives?

Also, I'd like to express my EXTREME frustration that the BIOS only lets you adjust MHz settings ONE MEGAHERTZ AT A TIME! And, my BIOS likes to spontaneously corrupt itself so I have to do the settings all over again... ugh.

get rid of that board and get an evga 680i A1. flash bios P28 onto it. done.

also there is no such thing as a QX6600. its either Q6600 or QX6700. and if you have the latter, I dont see why you are fiddling with the FSB...

that system is 14 million times faster then your old Athlon XP. you have chosen everything component well. except for the psu. I would have picked something else. but my flame suit is at the cleaners so I wont be so picky this time around.

Yeap, Q6600. QX6700 seemed like a waste of money.

But man, I really, really, really don't want to swap out motherboards if I can help it AT ALL. Putting this thing together has been a right PITA.

Thanks for the help. I did already update the BIOS. Hunting down a new battery is probably enough of a hassle that I'll just take your advice and grab one of those eVGA boards.

Heh, you probably really were running that quad-core at 266MHz then...likely bad BIOS settings (corrupted as you suggest)...certainly would explain the noticable lacking in performance dept.

You should consider submitting for world record for slowest quad-core at extremesystems forums...I doubt anyone has managed to get a quad to run at 266MHz!

Well, I think it's actually running at about 325 MHz. It's got the 9x multiplier, and it seems to just not be getting multiplied.

I'd submit it but I'm going on vacation next week and have to RMA the board before I go, so no time.

Seriously, you'd rather buy a new motherboard for $xxx than running down to rite aid or target or something and picking up a $x.xx or $xx.xx battery? :p

Just swing by one of those places and pick one up. A much cheaper and quicker fix than buying and waiting for the arrival of a new motherboard.

If the battery was the ONLY problem I was having, then I would. But my 2nd graphics card is intermittently not being discovered, and I also have the problem with it not being able to overclock the processor properly, despite having the most recent BIOS.

I only purchased this board(it's in my brothers system now) because of one of the reviews that thought it wasn't to bad, it's definitely NOT worth the purchase. It doesn't overclock well and they haven't had a new bios since jan, when my evga had one in MAY and quite a few fixes/updates since release. This thing is OK, but not worth the money imo. The DS3 system I have runs much better and is far cheaper.
